Chapter 7 - Descent into the Dark

The heavy iron door of the sub-basement slammed shut behind them with a resounding thud, cutting off the muffled sounds of shattering glass and heavy combat boots echoing through the upper floors. Pitch blackness swallowed them whole. Clara stumbled on the rough concrete steps, her hands scraping against the abrasive wall as panic clawed at her throat.

"Stay close to my left shoulder," Julian’s voice cut through the dark, remarkably calm, though she could hear the ragged rasp of his breathing as he carried Lily down the steep decline.

"Higgins... what’s going to happen to Higgins?" Clara whispered, her voice breaking into a sob as she navigated the blind descent.

"Higgins knew the risks when she signed on thirty years ago," Julian replied coldly, though a subtle tightening in his grip betrayed underlying anguish. "She is a trained operative, Clara. She knows how to buy time."

They reached the bottom of the stairwell. Julian felt along the damp concrete wall until his fingers found a heavy steel lever. With a sharp pull, a narrow emergency hatch popped open, letting in the cool, damp breeze of the estate’s underground drainage system, which connected directly to a storm tunnel leading out to the dense forest bordering the property.

As Julian squeezed through the low opening with Lily clutched securely in one arm, a series of muffled, concussive thuds vibrated through the earth above them. Flashbang grenades. The tactical team had breached the master study.

"Move, Clara!" Julian urged, holding his arm back to haul her through the narrow steel portal into the concrete drainage pipe.

They scrambled on hands and knees through the shallow, rushing water of the storm drain, the slime and mud soaking through Clara’s cream-colored dress and ruining her designer clothes. But vanity was a distant memory; survival was the only currency left.

After crawling fifty yards through the claustrophobic concrete tube, a faint sliver of moonlight appeared ahead, marking the exit grate that opened into the thick, overgrown briars of the national forest. Julian pushed his way through the rusted iron bars, which had been unlatched from the inside weeks ago—proof that he had been preparing for this exact nightmare for a long time.

He set Lily down gently in the wet moss, then pulled Clara out of the tunnel just as a deafening explosion ripped through the mansion behind them, turning the night sky a brilliant, terrifying shade of orange.

Julian pulled a compact satellite phone from his pocket, dialing a single pre-programmed emergency code, his face illuminated by the distant flames of his burning empire. But as the call connected, the static on the line was interrupted by a chilling, synthesized voice that made his blood run cold.
