Chapter 13 - The Showdown at the Docks

The salty sea breeze carried the faint scent of diesel, rust, and impending violence as Clara sat frozen in the backseat of the SUV, keeping watch over a still-sleeping Lily. Through the windshield, the maze of towering shipping containers stretched out like silent monoliths under the pale moonlight.
Suddenly, the sharp, distinct crack of a silenced gunshot echoed across the concrete docks, followed instantly by the heavy clatter of a metal crate shifting under sudden impact.
Clara clamped her hands over her mouth, her heart hammering a frantic rhythm against her ribs. Every instinct screamed at her to lock the doors tighter, to curl up and hide from the nightmare unfolding just out of sight. But as another muffled pop reverberated through the damp air, she realized she couldn't simply sit in the dark waiting to find out if her husband had survived.
Carefully, silently, she slipped out of the backseat, ensuring Lily remained safely tucked beneath the blanket. She crept around to the front of the SUV, using the heavy steel chassis as cover as she peered down the narrow alleyway between two forty-foot containers.
About fifty yards away, beneath the towering industrial crane, an eerie scene unfolded. Julian stood in the center of an open loading bay, his hands raised palms-up at his sides, completely unarmed. Surrounding him were half a dozen tactical operatives in matte-black gear, their carbines leveled directly at his chest.
Standing in front of them, leaning casually against a rusted forklift, was a tall, silver-haired man in an expensive wool overcoat—a stark contrast to the tactical mercenaries. It was Viktor Vance—not a cartel boss, but Julian’s estranged, ruthless older brother who had taken over the family’s criminal enterprise decades ago.
"I have to hand it to you, little brother," Viktor’s smooth, cultured voice drifted clearly across the quiet docks. "Burning down your own architectural masterpiece just to set a tracking beacon? You always were excessively dramatic."
"The game is over, Viktor," Julian’s voice rang out, steady and unwavering, cutting through the chilling sea breeze. "The federal cyber-unit has your satellite coordinates locked. In less than five minutes, this entire pier will be swarmed with federal agents."
Viktor let out a cold, humorless laugh, pushing himself off the forklift and taking a slow, deliberate step toward Julian. "Let them come. By the time they arrive, you’ll be sleeping at the bottom of the bay, and I’ll be halfway to international waters with a new identity."
Viktor drew a sleek, silver-plated pistol from his coat pocket, lifting the barrel until it rested squarely between Julian’s eyes.
"Any last words, Julian? Anything you want to say to the family you tried so hard to protect?" Viktor mocked softly, his finger tightening against the trigger.

Clara’s breath hitched in her throat. Without thinking, fueled by a desperate, blinding surge of protective fury, she reached down to the ground, grabbed a heavy iron wrench left behind by a dock worker, and stepped out from the shadows of the SUV.
