Chapter 6 - Breach at the Gates

The harsh screech of the security gate’s motor grinding against manual override echoed ominously through the cavernous halls of the luxury mansion. Julian was out of his chair in a single fluid motion, his hand instinctively sliding beneath his suit jacket to check the concealed holster at his ribs. The cold, calculating businessman had vanished entirely, replaced by the lethal operative he had tried so desperately to bury.

"Get up," Julian commanded, his voice a sharp, urgent hiss that brooked no argument. "Now."

Clara stood on trembling legs, her mind racing as adrenaline flooded her system. The reality of the cartel’s shadow, which moments ago felt like a distant nightmare described across a dinner table, was now hammering at their front door.

"The panic room," Clara gasped, remembering the architectural blueprints Julian had gloated over during construction. "We need to get Lily."

"No," Julian said, grabbing her arm with a grip that left no room for debate. "The panic room is the first place a professional extraction team will look or seal off with thermite. We go through the sub-basement utility tunnel."

Julian dragged her toward the study, moving with terrifying speed and absolute tactical precision. He unlocked the primary door, shoved Clara inside, and rushed toward the massive mahogany desk. With shaking hands, he punched a complex twelve-digit sequence into the digital wall pad hidden behind a sliding painting.

A heavy, low groan vibrated through the floorboards as a section of the oak bookshelves swung outward, revealing a dark, concrete stairwell plunging down into the earth. The air that drifted up from the passage smelled of damp concrete and metallic ozone.

"Higgins!" Julian bellowed toward the master suite corridor.

The elderly housekeeper appeared instantly, her face pale but completely composed, carrying little Lily wrapped tightly in a thick wool blanket. The toddler was surprisingly quiet, sensing the palpable terror in the adults without fully understanding the danger.

"They're at the courtyard fountain, sir," Mrs. Higgins reported, her voice steady as a rock. "Three men in tactical gear with suppressed carbines. They bypassed the biometric scanners using a signal repeater."

"Traitor in the tech division," Julian muttered darkly, his jaw clenching. He scooped Lily into his arms, pulling her tight against his chest. "Higgins, take the decoy car keys and trigger the garage alarm. Draw them toward the west wing."

"May God protect you, Mr. Vance," the old woman said softly, turning without a moment's hesitation toward certain death to buy them precious seconds.

"Go, Clara! Down the stairs, now!" Julian shouted, shoving Clara into the dark concrete shaft just as the heavy front glass of the mansion shattered upstairs with an ear-splitting crash of falling crystal and splintering wood.
