Chapter 8 - The Hidden Audit

Upstairs in the grand lobby, the marble floor was finally empty of the evening rush. Sarah stood near the revolving glass doors, her hand tightly holding six-year-old Lily’s small palm. The winter wind howled against the exterior glass, rattling the heavy brass frames, but inside, the atmosphere was thick with an unnatural stillness.
"Aunt Sarah, why are we waiting?" Lily asked, looking up with her bright blue eyes wide with curiosity. "The nice man said we were going to get hot chocolate across the street."
Sarah knelt down, brushing a stray strand of blonde hair away from Lily’s forehead. Her expression was tight with a mixture of fear and protective urgency.
"We're waiting for someone very important, Lily," Sarah explained carefully, her voice dropping to a whisper so the remaining desk clerk wouldn't overhear. "That old man... the one who dropped the coins... he's not just a stranger. He's connected to things from our past that your mother tried very hard to leave behind."
Lily tilted her head, her mind processing the adult words with a sharp, intuitive clarity that far exceeded her six years.
"He wasn't mean," Lily insisted softly, clutching the shiny quarter she had picked up from the floor inside her beige cardigan pocket. "He was testing the man in the blue suit. I could tell by the way he looked at him before the wheel was pushed."
Sarah’s breath hitched in her throat. She gripped Lily’s shoulders slightly firmer than intended.
"How do you know that, Lily?" Sarah asked, a sudden chill running down her spine.
Before Lily could answer, a tall, distinguished man in a dark charcoal overcoat stepped out from the private service elevator corridor. His silver-streaked hair was slicked back, and his weathered face bore a distinct, jagged scar across the left jawline. It was Rocco. He walked with a heavy, unhurried stride directly toward them, his dark eyes softening slightly as he looked down at the little girl.
"You have your mother's eyes, little one," Rocco said, stopping a few feet away and dipping his head respectfully toward Sarah. "And your grandfather’s knack for observing things people think you're too young to notice."
Sarah stood up abruptly, stepping protectively in front of Lily, her coat brushing against Rocco's overcoat.

"We don't want your money, Rocco," Sarah said, her voice shaking slightly despite her best efforts to sound brave. "We stayed hidden for fifteen years. Leave us out of whatever corporate war you and Arthur are finishing tonight."
