Chapter 5 - The Innocent Pawn

Upstairs in the grand lobby, the marble floor was quiet once more, save for the faint hum of the heating vents. Little girl Lily stood alone near the center of the room, her small fingers clutching the single shiny quarter she had picked up from the floor. The heavy crystal chandelier cast warm patterns of light across her blonde hair and her dark green dress. She looked around the empty, elegant space, completely unaware of the subterranean storm raging three floors below her feet.

A tall woman in a beige wool coat stepped out from the revolving glass doors, her breath pluming in the cold indoor air as she rushed across the marble.

"Lily! Thank goodness," the woman breathed, dropping to her knees and sweeping the little girl into a tight, desperate embrace. "I told you not to wander off near the elevators. Are you alright?"

"I'm fine, Aunt Sarah," Lily replied calmly, pulling back just enough to show the shiny quarter resting in her palm. "An old man dropped his coins. A mean man in a blue suit tried to chase him away, but the old man wasn't as weak as he pretended to be."

Sarah frowned, gently taking the coin and slipping it into her coat pocket while holding Lily's hand tightly.

"People play strange games in places like this, sweetheart," Sarah murmured, glancing suspiciously toward the closed service hallway. "We need to leave right now. This hotel isn't safe for people like us."

Down in the subterranean archive, the tension had reached a boiling point. Julian lunged forward, grabbing the federal transfer documents off the table and raising his arm to tear them to shreds. Before his fingers could touch the paper, Rocco’s heavy hand clamped down on Julian’s wrist with the crushing force of a vise.

Julian cried out in pain, dropping to one knee as Rocco twisted his arm behind his back with practiced military precision.

"Don't touch federal evidence, boy," Rocco warned, leaning down so his face was inches from Julian's ear. "Arthur gave you a chance to walk away with your dignity intact in the lobby. You chose greed and cruelty instead."

Arthur stood tall, towering over the broken concierge, his expression devoid of pity.

"She stays, you leave," Arthur said coldly, his voice echoing off the stone walls. "The federal agents waiting outside the service elevator will ensure you take the long walk to a federal holding cell."

Julian stared up in absolute disbelief as the heavy iron doors at the end of the hall slid open to reveal three men in dark suits and badges.
