Chapter 13 - The Morning After

The winter sun broke over the Chicago skyline, casting long, sharp shadows across the frozen surface of Lake Michigan. Inside the executive boardroom on the top floor of the Grand Meridian Hotel, the atmosphere was thick with tension and the rich aroma of freshly brewed black coffee. The remaining three members of the corporate board—men who had spent the previous evening sweating through their expensive Italian suits—sat in absolute silence around the mahogany table.

The heavy oak doors swung open, and Arthur Vance walked into the room. He wore his immaculate bespoke black suit, his posture completely straight, his silver hair neatly combed back. Rocco stood right behind him like a silent sentinel, while federal agent Miller waited out in the hallway with a stack of freeze-asset warrants.

Arthur did not take a seat at the head of the table. Instead, he walked slowly to the massive floor-to-ceiling window that overlooked the frozen harbor below.

"Good morning, gentlemen," Arthur said smoothly, not bothering to turn around. "I trust you slept well. I know the federal holding cells downtown can be rather drafty this time of year."

The chairman of the board, a pale man named Henderson who had signed every fraudulent document Julian put in front of him, cleared his throat nervously.

"Mr. Vance... Arthur," Henderson stammered, his hands trembling as he gripped the edge of the table. "We had no idea Julian was diverting funds into offshore accounts. We were merely acting under the assumption—"

Arthur turned around abruptly, his piercing brown eyes locking onto Henderson with a look so intense the man physically shrank back into his leather chair.

"You were acting out of greed, Henderson," Arthur interrupted, his voice cutting through the room like a cold winter wind. "You traded the Vance legacy for a percentage of a sinking ship. But the board meeting isn't about your corporate negligence. It's about the future."

Rocco stepped forward, tossing a thick packet of freshly printed stock certificates onto the center of the mahogany table, right in front of Henderson’s trembling hands.

"Effective at eight o'clock this morning, the Vance Family Trust has reclaimed one hundred percent voting control of Vance Enterprise," Rocco announced, his deep voice rolling across the silent room. "Your resignations are already typed on page four. Sign them, hand over your corporate keys, and walk out of this building before we let Agent Miller finish what he started downstairs."

Henderson looked down at the paper, his face turning the color of ash. He reached slowly for his gold-plated fountain pen, his hand shaking so badly he could barely grip the barrel.

"And what about Julian?" Henderson whispered, signing his name with a jagged, uneven stroke.

Arthur walked over to the table, placing both hands flat on the polished wood and leaning down slightly.

"Julian is learning the most important lesson my brother Rocco and I ever taught," Arthur said softly, a cold smile touching his lips. "Never pick up coins from a man who is only pretending to be weak."
