Chapter 10 - The Oak Street Brownstone

The snow began to fall in heavy, wet flakes as the black federal SUV pulled up to the curb outside the old brownstone on Oak Street. The ornate iron gate was rusted at the hinges, and the narrow stone steps leading up to the heavy oak front door were covered in a thin layer of untrodden powder.
Rocco stepped out of the passenger side first, his heavy boots crunching into the snow. He held the door open for Arthur, who emerged from the warm interior wearing his tan jacket over the bespoke black suit, his breath pluming in the freezing Chicago air. Behind them, Sarah and little Lily stepped out of a second vehicle, their expressions a mixture of exhaustion and profound apprehension.
"Why are we here, Great-Uncle Arthur?" Lily asked, her small voice cutting through the quiet hum of the idling engine. She looked up at the towering brick facade of the brownstone, clutching her beige cardigan tightly around her chest.
Arthur stopped at the base of the stone steps. He looked down at the little girl, the hard lines around his eyes softening into something resembling deep familial warmth.
"Because, Lily," Arthur said gently, "this is where your grandfather Thomas tried to hide a secret that was never his to keep. And it's time the Vance family finally lived under the same roof again."
Sarah rushed forward, stepping between Arthur and the front door, her hands balled into tight fists at her sides.
"You can't just barge in here!" Sarah cried out, her voice cracking with suppressed emotion. "Thomas is dead! He died in a charity hospital three years ago with empty pockets and a broken heart, trying to keep away from your ruthless corporate world! We built a quiet life away from your money and your enemies!"
Rocco stepped up beside his brother, his scarred face grim as he looked down at Sarah with piercing intensity.
"Thomas didn't run away from our world, Sarah," Rocco said softly, pulling a heavy brass key from his overcoat pocket—the exact match to the one Julian had stolen earlier that evening. "He was protecting you from the same men Julian was working for. The board didn't just want the company; they wanted the original land grants to the Chicago harbor front that your father hid inside the foundation of this very house."
Arthur reached out, gently placing a weathered hand on Sarah’s trembling shoulder.

"The chess game ended tonight, Sarah," Arthur whispered. "Now, it's time to open the house."
