Chapter 11 - The Foundation Stone

The heavy oak front door groaned on its hinges as the brass key turned in the lock for the first time in three years. The interior of the Oak Street brownstone smelled of dust, old books, and frozen memories. Rocco pushed the door open wide, reaching along the wall to flip the master light switch. A warm, yellow glow flooded the high-ceilinged foyer, illuminating a grand staircase draped in white dust sheets and a polished mahogany umbrella stand filled with rusted walking sticks.

Lily stepped inside first, her bright blue eyes wide with wonder as she traced her small finger along the edge of the carved wooden banister.

"It's like a castle," Lily whispered, her voice echoing softly against the high ceiling.

Sarah followed closely behind, pulling her wool coat tighter around herself as she surveyed the quiet, undisturbed room. The ghosts of her childhood seemed to linger in every shadow, reminding her of the long nights her father Thomas had spent hunched over drafting tables, drawing maps of shipping lanes that no longer existed.

Arthur walked slowly into the center of the foyer, his black suit shoes making soft scuffing sounds on the hardwood floor. He reached up, unzipping his tan jacket and letting it fall onto the bench by the door. He didn't need the disguise anymore. The wheelchair was gone, the frail old man in the lobby was a fading memory, and the man who had built Vance Enterprise from the ashes of the postwar depression was finally standing tall in his own ancestral home.

"Rocco," Arthur called out, his voice ringing with absolute authority. "Check the eastern wall behind the grandfather clock. Thomas always had a theatrical streak when it came to hiding family heirlooms."

Rocco grunted in affirmation, walking down the dim hallway toward the parlor where a massive mahogany grandfather clock stood frozen at four-fifteen. He gripped the heavy wooden case with both hands and gave it a sharp, calculated heave to the left.

With a loud click, a hidden door in the oak-paneled wall swung inward, revealing a dark, narrow staircase descending into the concrete foundation of the house.

"Found it," Rocco muttered, pulling a heavy-duty flashlight from his coat pocket and clicking it on. "And you're not going to believe what's sitting at the bottom of the steps."
