Chapter 2 - The Empty Office

The private elevator chimed softly as it descended three floors below the grand lobby, opening into the subterranean executive archives of the Grand Meridian. The air here smelled of old paper, damp stone, and expensive leather. Julian shoved Arthur’s wheelchair out into the dimly lit hallway, his navy blue suit jacket straining slightly across his broad shoulders. He walked with the heavy, arrogant stride of a man who believed he finally owned the world.
"End of the line, Arthur," Julian sneered, pulling a heavy brass key from his pocket and unlocking a heavy oak door marked with a tarnished gold plaque. "No more grand hotel lobbies. No more playing the poor, broken visionary. The Vance family dynasty belongs to the operational committee now, and I am the chairman."
Arthur remained completely silent, his head bowed slightly as if nursing the weight of his seventy-eight years. He wore his faded tan jacket zipped up to his chin, completely concealing the bulk of his torso. Julian kicked the heavy door wide open, revealing a windowless room dominated by a massive mahogany conference table. Sitting at the far end of the table were three corporate lawyers, their briefcases clicked open, waiting like vultures.
Julian grabbed the back of the wheelchair and roughly spun it around so Arthur faced the empty mahogany desk.
"Sign the transfer documents, Arthur," Julian commanded, dropping a thick leather folder onto the wood with a loud thud. "Your granddaughter is upstairs, completely unsupervised, and Chicago winter nights drop below freezing very quickly. Cooperate, and she gets a warm meal. Resist, and she learns what happens to people who get in my way."
Arthur raised his head slowly. His weathered face remained remarkably serene, devoid of the panic Julian had so clearly anticipated. The old man’s slow eye movement tracked every detail of the room—the flickering fluorescent light overhead, the trembling hands of the nervous lawyers, and the heavy brass paperweight sitting near Julian’s right elbow.
"You always were impatient, Julian," Arthur said, his voice carrying an uncanny strength that made the young concierge pause. "You mistake ruthless ambition for actual power. A true leader builds a foundation; a thief merely steals the blueprints."
Julian’s face flushed red with sudden anger. He leaned across the table, slamming both palms onto the mahogany surface.
"Spare me the philosophical garbage!" Julian hissed, his voice trembling with suppressed fury. "You built this empire on lies and regulatory loopholes, and now it crumbles. Sign the papers!"
Arthur slowly unzipped his tan jacket, revealing a tailored black suit underneath.

"Before I sign anything," Arthur whispered, locking eyes with Julian, "we need to discuss my brother."
