Chapter 1: The Shattered Mirror**

Julian stared at the tiny portrait resting in the girl’s palm. The girl called herself Mia, but the face looking back from the worn silver was unmistakably Elena’s—eyes wide, filled with a defiant brightness that time had never dulled. Beside her stood Julian himself, twenty years younger, devoid of tailored suits and burdened only by wild promises.
Across the room, Clara remained motionless. Her crimson dress, chosen to celebrate their high-society engagement, suddenly seemed like a warning flare. "Julian?" Clara whispered, the velvet elegance draining from her tone. "Who is that child?"
Julian’s throat felt parched. "Mia... where did you get this?"
"My mother kept it in a cedar box under her bed," the girl replied steadily, her fingers closing gently over the metal casing. "Before she died last winter, she told me that if the world ever turned cold, I should find the man with the swallow tattoo on his collarbone. She said you possessed an honorable heart, even if the world made you forget it."
The word *died* struck Julian like a physical blow. He had spent eight years building a fortress of wealth, believing Elena had simply walked away to start a life far from his family’s corrupt empire. The room seemed to tilt beneath his polished oxfords.
"Elena didn't abandon you, Julian," Clara murmured, stepping forward, her sharp intuition piercing his silence. "You abandoned her."
"I sent money," Julian said, his voice cracking beneath the weight of sudden realization. "Every month. Through my family’s trust."
"Nobody ever came," Mia said simply. "It was just Mama and me in the clinic town up north. Until the coughing wouldn't stop."

Julian sank into the mahogany chair. The illusion of his carefully curated life had unraveled in less than two minutes.
