Chapter 8

Eleanor stepped forward, her hand reaching out to touch the heavy zipper of the rose-gold suitcase before Clara could react. "Step aside, Clara. Now."
Clara didn't move, but her calm exterior finally fractured completely. Her jaw tightened, and the micro-expressions of polite indifference were replaced by a cold, hardened resolve. "If you open that bag, Eleanor, you aren't just destroying whatever remains of our family dynamic. You are blowing up Julian's career, his professional reputation, and every financial asset we’ve spent the last decade building."
Julian stared at his sister in absolute horror. "What are you talking about? What does my career have to do with whatever is in that suitcase?"
"Everything," Clara hissed quietly, leaning in so only Julian and Eleanor could hear her words over the ambient terminal noise. "The restructuring loans we secured last quarter weren't approved by the board, Julian. I forged your signatures on the primary promissory notes to keep the firm afloat after the market crash. The twelve thousand five hundred dollars charged to Margaret’s account was merely the emergency retainer fee required by our offshore counsel to file the emergency injunction before the federal audit hits your office on Monday morning."

The terminal around them seemed to tilt on its axis. Eleanor stared at her husband, the betrayal cutting far deeper than any financial sum. Julian staggered back a step, colliding gently against the metal support pillar as the full weight of Clara's confession crashed down upon him. He had trusted his sister implicitly, and that blind trust had directly implicated him in corporate fraud.
Margaret remained seated on the bench, her expression grim and weathered. She had suspected financial impropriety for months, but hearing the confirmation spoken aloud in the middle of a crowded airport terminal during the holiday season was a bitter pill to swallow. She opened her brown leather handbag once more, pulling out a printed flight itinerary that contained hidden notes scribbled in red ink.
