Chapter 7

The confrontation threatened to disrupt the steady flow of passengers streaming past toward Gate 45, forcing the family to step back against the structural support pillar of the terminal. The festive decorations overhead felt increasingly mocking, a canopy of plastic joy framing a very real domestic crisis. Eleanor refused to move another inch toward the jet bridge until she received a satisfactory explanation for the financial deception.
"We are not boarding this plane," Eleanor declared, her voice ringing with absolute finality. "Not until we open that suitcase and find out what kind of cargo justifies a twelve-thousand-dollar surcharge on my mother’s credit line."
Clara stiffened, her hands tightening protectively around the handle of the rose-gold rolling suitcase. "You will do no such thing, Eleanor. That luggage contains sensitive legal documents and proprietary corporate files belonging to the firm. Opening it in the middle of a public airport terminal is not only a breach of protocol, it is a legal disaster waiting to happen."

"Corporate files?" Margaret interjected, her voice cutting through Clara's defense like a razor. "Since when do corporate files require customized biometric locks and dual-authentication tags registered to a private offshore trust? Clara, I built my career navigating corporate transparency. I know a shell company ledger when I see one."
Julian looked between his wife and his sister, feeling the ground beneath him crumble entirely. He had always trusted Clara’s financial acumen, blindly signing documents whenever she requested his signature for family estate planning. Now, standing under the glaring lights of the holiday-decorated terminal, he realized he had effectively signed away far more than he ever imagined. The rose-gold suitcase was no longer just a container for clothes; it was the physical manifestation of a massive embezzlement scheme orchestrated right under his oblivious nose.
