Chapter 4
Margaret lowered herself onto the padded vinyl bench near the departure counter, her movements unhurried despite the frantic energy of the surrounding travelers. She clutched her brown leather handbag tightly with both hands, resting it across her knees as her eyes dropped once more to the glowing display of her mobile device. The overhead lighting caught the silver threads in her blonde hair, accentuating the stern set of her jaw and the deep concentration etched around her eyes.

"Final boarding call for flight 452 to Miami," the voice announced uniformly across all concourses.

The announcement acted as an immediate catalyst. Julian quickened his pace, closing the distance between himself and the benches where Margaret sat. Eleanor joined them, her expression tight with lingering resentment. Clara stood patiently beside her rose-gold suitcase, her hands resting calmly on the retractable handle as if she were waiting for a train that had already been delayed indefinitely.
Margaret did not move toward the gate. Instead, her fingers tapped a rapid sequence against her phone screen, bringing up a secure financial application that required biometric verification. A tiny green light flashed near the front-facing camera of her device, confirming her identity before pulling up a newly generated invoice document. The ambient sounds of rolling luggage and laughing children seemed to fade into a vacuum as the gravity of the moment settled over the quartet. Julian glanced down at his mother, expecting her to stand and gather her things for the final push down the jet bridge, but she remained completely frozen in place, staring at the screen with an intensity that made the hair on the back of his neck stand up.
