Chapter 5

Margaret stared intently down at her smartphone screen, her breath catching slightly in her throat as her eyes scanned the itemized totals displayed in bold black text against a stark white background. The device was displaying a recent flight confirmation document coupled with a staggering auxiliary charge totaling precisely twelve thousand five hundred dollars. Her face drained of its remaining color, leaving her features tight and drawn with a tense, unmistakable concern that pierced through her usual stoic exterior.

Eleanor stepped closer, noticing the sudden shift in her mother’s posture. "Margaret? Is everything alright? We need to head to the gate right now or we are going to miss the boarding window."

Margaret did not answer immediately. She tilted the screen slightly away from Julian’s inquiring gaze, her thumb hovering protectively over the digital signature field. The transaction had cleared less than ten minutes ago, routed through an offshore account associated with a corporate travel agency that Julian’s firm supposedly utilized for executive retreats.

Julian frowned, stepping closer to read the glowing text reflected in his mother-in-law’s glasses. "What is that? Let me see the confirmation number. The corporate travel desk should have covered all our bookings under the annual retainer."

"It isn't a corporate booking, Julian," Margaret finally spoke, her voice remarkably steady despite the shock vibrating through her frame. "And it certainly isn't an executive retreat. This is a personal invoice, billed directly to my personal credit line, authorizing a lump-sum transfer executed through Clara’s corporate identification number."

Clara’s calm facade cracked for a fraction of a second, a micro-expression of pure panic flashing across her eyes before she expertly reasserted her detached control. She adjusted her sunglasses, refusing to meet either Eleanor or Julian’s bewildered stares. The rose-gold suitcase sat silently between them, suddenly looking less like a piece of luggage and more like a Pandora's box waiting to be forced wide open on the shores of Miami.
