Chapter 10

The final boarding call announcements echoed through the terminal once more, signaling that the jet bridge door was moments away from closing permanently. Yet, none of the four individuals made a single move toward the departure gate. The holiday magic had entirely evaporated, replaced by the cold, sterile reality of accountability and impending exposure.

Clara looked around the terminal, realizing that her meticulously planned escape route had completely collapsed under the weight of its own deception. She sighed, her shoulders slumping as the rigid posture of absolute control finally gave way to exhaustion. With trembling fingers, she punched a six-digit numerical code into the biometric pad integrated into the lock of the rose-gold suitcase.

The heavy metal latches clicked open simultaneously with a sharp, mechanical snap that sounded unnaturally loud in the quiet alcove. Clara lifted the lid, revealing neat stacks of printed financial ledgers, encrypted hard drives, and legal binders filled with corporate letterheads bearing forged signatures in blue ink. The physical evidence of their downfall was laid out plainly for anyone to inspect.

Eleanor stared down at the contents of the suitcase, feeling a strange sense of calm wash over her amidst the chaos. The illusion of their comfortable, predictable life had been permanently shattered, but at least the truth was finally out in the open, unmasked and undeniable. She looked at Julian, seeing a broken man who had allowed his family loyalty to blind him to illegal activities.

"What do we do now?" Julian asked quietly, his eyes fixed on the incriminating documents resting inside the rose-gold rolling luggage.

Margaret stepped forward, pulling her smartphone from her bag once more. "We don't board flight 452. And we certainly don't run away to Miami. We call federal authorities directly from this terminal, cooperate fully with the investigation, and start taking responsibility for the mess you two created."

Clara closed the lid of the suitcase with a soft thud, offering no further resistance. She knew when a game was definitively lost. She looked at her brother, offering a tired, melancholy smile that acknowledged the end of their shared deception.
