Chapter 2

Clara slowly turned her head toward the expansive floor-to-ceiling windows overlooking the active departure gates. Outside, heavy winter clouds hung low over the tarmac, threatening an early evening snowstorm that could ground flights across the entire eastern seaboard. Her expression remained impeccably calm, almost unnervingly so, reflecting a total lack of concern for the looming weather delays or the palpable marital tension radiating from Eleanor.

Julian glanced nervously at his sister, his brow furrowing as he observed her quiet composure. He recognized that specific look; it was the exact expression Clara wore whenever she had successfully navigated a high-stakes financial deal or manipulated a difficult family situation to her ultimate advantage. He reached out and touched Clara’s shoulder lightly, a silent gesture of reassurance that seemed entirely unnecessary given her impenetrable demeanor.

Eleanor crossed her arms over her dark top, feeling an invisible wall rising between herself and Julian. Their marriage had weathered numerous storms over fifteen years, but this sudden trip to Miami felt less like a vacation and more like an exile. She watched the way Julian looked at his sister—a mixture of fraternal loyalty and lingering childhood intimidation. Margaret remained seated on a nearby metal bench, her thumb swiping rhythmically across her phone screen while her brown leather handbag rested securely on her lap. The ambient noise of the terminal faded into a dull roar, leaving the small group isolated in their individual spheres of anxiety.

Julian finally spoke, his voice measured and quiet. "We talked about this, Eleanor. It’s the holidays. Family dynamics are complicated. Margaret just wanted a change of scenery from the cold."

"Complicated is one word for it," Eleanor replied, her tone devoid of warmth. "Convenient is another. Especially since she didn't pack a single winter coat for a trip starting in thirty-degree weather."

Clara offered a slight, knowing smirk, though she kept her lips firmly closed. She patted the top of the rose-gold suitcase, a small gesture that drew Eleanor’s suspicious gaze immediately. There was something inside that luggage—something far heavier than holiday attire. Julian sighed heavily, rubbing the back of his neck as he realized the delicate illusion of a peaceful family holiday was rapidly unraveling long before their wheels ever left the concrete runway.
