Chapter 6

The realization hit Julian with the physical force of a physical blow. He stared at his sister, his mouth parting slightly in disbelief as the financial implications of Margaret’s statement rippled through his mind. Twelve thousand five hundred dollars was not the cost of standard economy holiday tickets, nor did it reflect standard baggage fees or lounge upgrades. It was a targeted extraction, executed with chilling precision under the cover of a family vacation.

"Clara," Julian said, his voice dropping into a harsh, warning register that forced several nearby travelers to glance their way. "What did you charge to Margaret’s account? Explain this right now before we take another step toward that gate."

Clara exhaled a slow, measured breath, maintaining her posture of immaculate detachment. She slowly pushed her sunglasses down the bridge of her nose just enough to reveal sharp, calculating eyes that mirrored Julian's own. "Keep your voice down, Julian. You’re making a scene, and it’s entirely unnecessary. Mother knows perfectly well what that charge represents. It’s an investment in your future, whether you appreciate the unconventional methods or not."

Eleanor stepped between them, her anger finally overriding her confusion. She looked from her husband to her sister-in-law, realizing with sickening clarity that she had been kept completely in the dark regarding her own life choices. "An investment? Since when does an investment cost twelve thousand dollars and get billed behind our backs right before boarding a flight we didn't even want to take? Julian, tell me you had nothing to do with this."

Julian shook his head frantically, his hands raised in a defensive gesture. "I swear to you, Eleanor, I had no idea. I thought the company was paying for the travel logistics. I didn't authorize any secondary charges."

Margaret slowly locked her phone screen, the bright display fading into black as she slipped the device back into her brown leather handbag with deliberate slowness. She looked up at her son-in-law, her gaze sharp and unforgiving. "Your ignorance is becoming a severe liability, Julian. And Clara's financial recklessness has finally crossed a line that cannot be ignored or excused away by holiday cheer."
