Chapter 9: The Midnight Audit

The digital glow of Vance’s phone illuminated the dim office with a harsh blue light. Vance glanced down at the screen, and for the first time since he entered the room, his composed, corporate exterior completely cracked. A sharp crease formed between his brows as he read the incoming alert. He picked up the device, tapping the screen rapidly before looking up at Clara and Maya with an expression that had shifted from arrogant confidence to genuine, unadulterated alarm.
"What is it, Arthur?" Evelyn asked, her voice trembling as she sensed the sudden shift in the room's atmosphere. "Did the bank flag the account?"
"Worse," Vance muttered, his voice tight and strained. "The federal audit committee just initiated an unannounced compliance review of the primary estate accounts. They aren't waiting for a formal subpoena. They're already on-site at the downtown regional branch."
Clara’s eyes widened with sudden triumph, a sharp smile breaking through her tense expression. "Well, look at that. It seems the system works faster than your corporate spin, Arthur. The federal auditors must have picked up the irregular routing numbers we flagged earlier this morning."
Tyler panicked, stepping toward Vance with frantic energy. "Can't you stop them? You have contacts inside the regional office, don't you? Use your influence!"
"Influence doesn't work when an automated forensic sweep is triggered by federal algorithmic flags," Vance snapped back, losing his cool entirely as he snapped his briefcase shut. "Your reckless greed just invited an SEC investigation directly to our doorstep, Evelyn. If they audit the primary accounts, they won't just find the housing transfer—they'll find every single offshore shell company we set up over the last three years."
Maya stopped at the doorway, turning back to face them with a cold, unforgiving stare. The tide had completely turned. The leverage they thought they had over the family legacy had dissolved into a panicked scramble for self-preservation.
"Looks like your survival strategy just hit a dead end," Maya said, her voice steady and composed. "You wanted to protect the family name? You should have thought of that before you forged grandfather's signature and stole from the people who trusted you."
Clara pulled out her phone, dialing a direct extension with practiced speed. "I'm calling our legal counsel to meet the federal auditors at the downtown branch right now. We'll hand over the complete physical file with all the original documentation."
Evelyn collapsed into the nearby desk chair, her hands covering her face as the reality of impending federal charges finally crashed down around her. Tyler stood frozen beside her, staring at the floor in utter despair. Only Vance maintained a shred of composure, though his eyes burned with a dangerous, calculating malice as he looked at Maya and Clara.

"You think you've won," Vance said quietly, his voice dropping into a menacing whisper as he slid the flash drive back into his inner coat pocket. "You've only just opened a door you won't be able to close."
Without another word, Vance turned and strode past them down the hallway, his footsteps echoing rapidly against the stairs as he made a desperate exit to salvage whatever corporate assets he had left.
