Chapter 3: The Ghost Account

The digital numbers glowing on the laptop screen seemed surreal in the dim light of the home office. Maya leaned in close, her fingers tapping rhythmically against the wooden desk as Clara typed a series of administrative passwords to bypass the primary firewall. The home office smelled faintly of old leather books and peppermint tea, a stark contrast to the digital storm brewing inside the machine. Julian stood behind them, his hands resting on the back of Maya’s chair, his breathing shallow as he watched the encrypted PDF file slowly decrypt itself onto the monitor.
"I can't believe Drew would risk federal charges for a down payment," Julian muttered, shaking his head in sheer disbelief. "Tyler always manipulated him, but this goes way beyond poor judgment."
"Greed makes people blind to the consequences," Clara replied without looking up, her fingers flying across the keyboard with practiced efficiency. "When grandfather set up these accounts, he insisted on absolute transparency. He knew Evelyn and Tyler had a history of financial recklessness. That’s why he named me executor of the estate."
"Then why didn't you stop them sooner?" Maya asked, turning her head to look up at her aunt, her tone searching for accountability.
Clara stopped typing for a fraction of a second, the cursor blinking rhythmically against a blank white field. She let out a long, weary sigh, her shoulders slumping. "Because I trusted the yearly audits. I trusted your mother to manage the local disbursements while I handled the legal trust overseas. I never imagined they would completely wipe out your educational account to bail out Tyler's failing real estate ventures."
The screen flickered, revealing a secondary sub-account that had been hidden deep within the bank's legacy database. Maya gasped softly, leaning closer to read the transaction history. The account wasn't just funding Tyler’s house; it was feeding a much larger, highly secretive network of offshore investments managed by an unknown third party.

"That's not Tyler's name on the receiving end," Maya whispered, pointing a trembling finger at a corporate entity listed as the primary recipient of the laundered funds.
Clara squinted at the monitor, her face draining of all color as she recognized the corporate shell company. "That’s not possible," she breathed. "That company belongs to Arthur Vance."
