Chapter 4: The Vance Connection

The name hung in the heavy air of the office like a physical weight. Arthur Vance was not a distant acquaintance; he was Evelyn’s longtime business partner and a man the family had known for over two decades. Maya pulled back from the desk, her mind racing as she pieced together years of subtle holiday dinners where Vance had always been present, smiling warmly while quietly pulling the strings behind the family’s shifting financial landscape. Julian stepped back, his expression darkening as the pieces of the puzzle began to violently snap together.
"Vance helped mother buy her share of the consulting firm years ago," Julian recalled, his voice tight. "Grandfather always warned us to keep our distance from him, but mother insisted he was a genius investor."
"He's a con artist," Clara corrected sharply, closing the laptop lid with a soft click that echoed loudly in the quiet room. "If Vance is tied to these offshore accounts, then the house Tyler bought isn't just a simple real estate purchase. It’s part of a much larger asset-stripping scheme designed to systematically bleed grandfather’s estate dry before anyone could audit the records."
Maya stood up abruptly, pacing toward the window that overlooked the quiet suburban street outside. A sleek black sedan was parked across the road, its engine idling subtly, casting faint exhaust fumes into the crisp afternoon air. She narrowed her eyes, watching the tinted driver's side window.
"Is someone parked out there?" Maya asked, her voice dropping to a cautious whisper as she motioned for Clara and Julian to approach the window.
Clara parted the vertical blinds just enough to get a clear view of the vehicle. Her expression hardened instantly. "That's Vance's car. Or at least, one of his corporate vehicles. How did they find out we were looking into the accounts so quickly?"
Julian stepped forward, his face pale with sudden paranoia. "Mother must have seen us pulling out the paperwork in the kitchen. She must have called Vance the second we started asking questions about the college fund."
Maya turned away from the window, her resolve hardening into pure defiance. She walked back to the desk, scooped up her phone, and slipped the vital bank statements directly into her canvas bag.
"We can't stay here," Maya said, her voice steady and commanding. "If Vance is involved, mother isn't just protecting Tyler anymore. She's protecting herself from a federal indictment."

Clara grabbed her briefcase, her keys jingling in her hand. "We go to the local precinct first thing. We have the digital trails and the forged signatures. They can't talk their way out of this physical evidence."
Before they could reach the door, heavy footsteps echoed loudly in the hallway, and the doorknob began to turn with a slow, deliberate click.
