Chapter 12: The Blackmail Call

Maya stared at the glowing screen of her phone as it vibrated relentlessly against the polished mahogany table. The unknown number flashed with an insistence that seemed to demand immediate attention. Clara reached out, gently touching Maya’s wrist to counsel caution, while Agent Miller gestured toward the tech specialist standing near the corner of the room, who immediately pulled out a portable signal-tracing device and began connecting cables to Maya's phone jack.

"Put it on speaker, Maya, but let the trace complete," Miller instructed in a hushed, controlled tone, his face set in stone.

Maya took a deep, steadying breath, pressed the green accept button, and placed the phone on the center of the conference table. She kept her voice entirely devoid of fear as she spoke into the silent room.

"Hello?" Maya said, her tone sharp and composed.

A low, familiar chuckle echoed through the phone’s tiny speaker—a cold, calculated sound that belonged to Arthur Vance. The background noise on his end sounded like heavy machinery and rushing wind, consistent with the industrial district near the old municipal harbor.

"You're remarkably persistent, Maya," Vance’s voice purred smoothly through the speaker, carrying an unsettling undertone of relaxed confidence. "Running around town with federal agents and banking statements won't change the reality of your situation."

"Your offshore accounts are frozen, Arthur, and the federal strike team has your primary servers," Maya retorted, leaning in close to the microphone. "You're out of time and out of options."

"Am I?" Vance replied mockingly. "Check your email, Maya. I just sent you a very interesting little video file taken from the security cameras at your mother’s house. It features your dear brother Tyler and your mother discussing the precise mechanics of how they forged your grandfather's signature while he was unconscious."

Evelyn, who had just walked quietly into the back of the conference room accompanied by a local police officer, let out a sharp gasp of horror, her hands flying to her mouth as the full weight of Vance's betrayal crashed over her.

"You recorded us?" Evelyn cried out, stepping forward into the microphone's range. "You said that conversation was strictly confidential!"

"Nothing is confidential in business, Evelyn, especially when pawns try to turn against the grandmaster," Vance replied coldly, his voice dripping with disdain. "Here is my proposition, Maya: you call off the federal audit on my primary corporate accounts within the next ten minutes, or I upload this confession directly to the public media channels. Your family name will be permanently dragged through the mud, and your mother will spend the next ten years in a federal penitentiary."

The line clicked dead instantly, leaving a hollow, echoing silence in the room as the signal trace finished its calculation and blinked a specific location onto the technician's monitor.
