Chapter 5: Confrontation in the Hallway

The door swung inward to reveal Evelyn standing in the threshold, her posture rigid and her face devoid of its usual maternal warmth. Behind her stood Tyler, his hands jammed aggressively into the pockets of his designer jeans, wearing a smirk that failed to mask the nervous twitch in his left eye. The afternoon light behind them created long, menacing silhouettes that stretched across the hardwood floor, cutting off any immediate path toward the front exit.
"Where do you think you're going with those files?" Evelyn asked, her voice dangerously calm, carrying an authoritarian tone that she rarely used unless she was cornered.
Maya stood her ground, stepping in front of Clara and Julian to shield the briefcase containing the incriminating bank documents. "We're going wherever we need to go to get answers, mother. Or should I say, we're going to the authorities to report the theft of my trust fund and grandfather's forged signature."
Tyler scoffed loudly, stepping past Evelyn into the room, his arrogant demeanor flaring up instantly. "You're not going anywhere, Maya. You think you're so smart with your little college papers, but you don't know a damn thing about how the real world works."
"Shut up, Tyler," Clara snapped, stepping around Maya with a cold, intimidating authority that instantly made Tyler step back a half-pace. "You’ve committed felony fraud, both of you. Every single wire transfer from the estate account to your mortgage company has been digitally logged and traced."
Evelyn’s eyes flashed with sudden anger, the mask of a defensive mother completely dropping away to reveal a calculating strategist. "You have no idea what sacrifices I made to keep this family afloat after your grandfather died, Clara. The estate was heavily leveraged. We had debts you wouldn't believe."
"Then you should have liquidated assets legally instead of stealing Maya's future and forging a dying man's signature!" Julian shouted, his restraint finally snapping as he stepped up beside Maya.

Evelyn slowly raised her hand, her expression turning ice-cold as she pulled her phone from her cardigan pocket. She didn't argue further; instead, she pressed a single speed-dial button, holding the screen up so they could all see the active call connecting to Arthur Vance.
"You're making a terrible mistake," Evelyn whispered, her voice chillingly devoid of emotion. "Arthur is already downstairs with the legal team. You can't fight a battle you've already lost."
