Chapter 6: The Legal Trap

The ringing tone from Evelyn’s phone echoed mockingly through the tense office, but before the call could connect, a sharp, authoritative knock sounded from the front entrance downstairs. Everyone froze. Tyler’s arrogant smirk vanished instantly, replaced by a flicker of genuine panic as heavy, deliberate footsteps began ascending the staircase toward the office. Evelyn lowered her phone slowly, her eyes darting between Clara and the doorway as the brass handle twisted open to reveal a tall, silver-haired man in a tailored charcoal suit carrying a leather briefcase.

Arthur Vance stepped into the room with an unnerving, practiced calmness, his sharp blue eyes assessing the tense standoff in an instant. He offered a polite, almost mocking smile to Clara and Maya before turning his attention entirely toward Evelyn.

"Evelyn, my dear, I thought I told you to handle the domestic disputes before inviting legal complications into the fold," Vance said, his voice smooth and cultured, carrying the heavy weight of corporate dominance.

Clara stepped forward, her posture rigid with professional disdain. "Arthur Vance. You have no jurisdiction here. This is a private family estate matter involving criminal forgery."

Vance chuckled softly, adjusting the cuffs of his crisp white shirt. "Criminal forgery is a very heavy accusation, Ms. Clara. Especially when every document in your possession bears the legal seal of approval from the estate's primary proxy—which happens to be Evelyn, acting under full power of attorney granted by your late father before his passing."

"That power of attorney was revoked three weeks before he died," Maya countered sharply, pulling a second, heavily stamped document from her bag and holding it up for Vance to see. "We have the notarized amendment right here, signed by three independent medical witnesses who certified his mental competence at the time."

Vance’s polite smile faltered for a fraction of a second, a micro-expression of genuine surprise rippling across his polished features. He glanced at Evelyn, whose face drained of color as she realized the oversight.

"You didn't tell me about the medical amendment," Vance said, his smooth voice dropping an octave into a dangerous murmur.

"She didn't know about it because grandfather filed it directly with his personal attorney in secret," Julian added, pressing the advantage. "Which means every dollar you funneled into those offshore accounts is entirely illegal."

The atmosphere in the room shifted instantly from a family dispute into a high-stakes corporate standoff, and Vance’s demeanor hardened from charming associate to ruthless strategist.
