Chapter 1: The Broken Promise

The afternoon sunlight poured mercilessly through the spotless windows of the suburban living room, illuminating every dust particle in the air. Maya stood frozen near the edge of the glass coffee table, her knuckles whitening as she gripped a thick stack of bank statements and her mobile phone. Her dark hair fell loosely over the shoulders of her emerald-green sweater, swaying slightly as her chest rose and fell with controlled, furious breaths. Across the room, her mother, Evelyn, stood rigidly beside the television stand, her white cardigan catching the glaring light. The framed family photographs behind Evelyn seemed to mock the sudden fracture in their reality. Maya’s gaze locked onto her mother, her eyes burning with a mixture of disbelief and deep-seated betrayal that had been brewing for months.

"Where’s my college money?" Maya demanded, her voice cutting through the silent room with a sharp, venomous edge that left no room for hesitation.

Evelyn didn’t flinch immediately, though a subtle micro-expression of guilt flickered across her features before hardening into a defensive mask. She shifted her weight, pulling the edges of her cardigan closer around her waist.

"We used it for Tyler’s house," Evelyn replied, her tone defensive, as if she were simply stating a minor household expense rather than embezzling her daughter's entire educational future.

Maya let out a dry, incredulous laugh that held no humor, only raw pain. "You used my tuition? The fund grandfather set up specifically for my degree? You gave it to Tyler?"

Evelyn stepped forward slightly, her expression intensifying as she dug her heels into the argument. "He needed it more than you do."

Maya stared at her mother, feeling the ground drop out from beneath her feet. "He's thirty, and he wastes every dime he touches. I earned those scholarships, and that fund was supposed to cover my final year."

Before Evelyn could fire back another justification, a sharp notification chime rang out from Maya's phone on the coffee table, lighting up with a fresh email notification from the bank’s fraud department that completely altered the scope of what they were hiding.
