Chapter 8 - The Hidden Room

The heavy mahogany doors slammed shut behind the federal marshals as they hauled Arthur and a cursing Julian out into the crisp morning air, their sirens wailing softly in the distance. The grand foyer fell back into a heavy, suffocating silence, broken only by Beatrice’s erratic, shallow breathing as she slumped against the grand staircase banister.
Elena stood frozen, her mind echoing with Julian’s parting words. The person who really ordered the destruction of your husband’s life... is still sitting inside this house.
She slowly turned her head to look at Beatrice. The older woman looked frail, her manicured fingers trembling as she clutched her pearls, but there was a strange, defiant glint in her tear-filled eyes.
"It wasn't Arthur," Elena whispered, her voice dangerously quiet as she stepped closer to the trembling woman. "And it wasn't just Julian's corporate greed. You knew about David’s accident, didn't you, Beatrice?"
Beatrice let out a dry, rattling laugh that sounded more like a cough. "You think you're so clever, Elena. You march in here with an iron box and a federal warrant, thinking you've won the war. But you don't even know what room you're standing in."
Elena gestured for Lily to stay put near the console table, keeping her distance from Beatrice while maintaining absolute control of the space. "Talk. Now. Who else is involved?"
Beatrice pushed herself off the banister, standing up as straight as her aging spine would allow. She pointed a shaking finger directly toward the massive, dark wood wainscoting paneling beneath the grand staircase—a section of the wall that looked completely solid and continuous with the rest of the architecture.
"There is no vault in the bank downtown that holds the real secrets, Elena," Beatrice spat out, a manic edge creeping into her voice. "David wasn't killed by a faulty brake line on a mountain road. He was executed to protect the family's true foundation."
Elena’s blood ran cold. "What are you talking about?"
"Behind that wall," Beatrice whispered, her eyes wide and feverish, "lies the original ledger of the Sterling syndicate. And the person who pushed David over that cliff... is currently waiting in the master study upstairs."
Before Elena could process the sheer horror of the revelation, a soft, rhythmic click echoed from the staircase above them.

All three of them turned their heads toward the landing. Standing at the top of the stairs, half-shrouded in the shadows of the crystal chandelier, was a figure clapping their hands slowly, one deliberate applause at a time.
