Chapter 11 - The Chime of Doom

The antique grandfather clock chimed erratically, its deep, resonant gongs striking out of sequence, echoing like an ominous warning through the silent foyer. The heavy brass pendulum inside swung wildly, casting distorted shadows across the marble walls.
Elena kept her thumb firmly pressed against the emergency broadcast button of her satellite phone, her eyes locked on Marcus. "Who?" she demanded, her voice cutting over the chaotic ringing of the clock. "Name them, Marcus. Who bought the majority shares?"
Marcus smirked, leaning back slightly against the wooden staircase railing, regaining a fraction of his arrogant composure. "You spent months digging through Arthur’s accounts and tracking Julian’s debt, but you never looked at the domestic registry updates, did you? You assumed the old man's will was airtight."
Beatrice covered her face with her trembling hands, letting out a muffled sob. "Stop it, Marcus... just stop this madness before it's too late!"
"It's already too late, Mother," Marcus replied coldly. He looked back down at Elena, his pale blue eyes gleaming with sadistic satisfaction. "The person who owns fifty-one percent of Sterling Industries—the person who signed the order to liquidate David’s division—is sitting right over there."
Marcus slowly raised his right arm, pointing an index finger away from Elena and straight toward the dark, recessed corner of the foyer near the mahogany console table.
Elena’s heart skipped a beat. She whipped her head around, her protective instincts flaring as she positioned Lily further behind her.
Standing in the dim light near the console table, having quietly slipped out of the shadows while everyone was distracted by the confrontation on the stairs, was a figure no one expected.
It was Clara Vance—Julian Vance’s estranged sister, who had lived quietly as the family’s estate archivist and arch-librarian for over a decade. She wore a simple, severe grey wool dress, her dark hair pulled back into a tight bun, holding a thick, leather-bound ledger against her chest like a shield.
Elena stared at her in utter disbelief. "Clara? You're just an archivist. You don't have the capital to buy a controlling stake in a multi-billion-dollar enterprise!"
Clara stepped forward out of the shadows, her footsteps completely silent against the marble floor. Her face was an impenetrable mask of absolute coldness.
"Archivists see everything, Mrs. Sterling," Clara said softly, her voice carrying an eerie, calm authority that made the hairs on Elena’s arms stand up. "We catalog the lies, we file the murders, and occasionally... we inherit the kingdom when the fools destroy each other."
Elena’s mind raced. "The primary trust... it has a lineage clause. Only a direct bloodline member can hold the controlling shares!"
Clara let out a low, humorless chuckle. She opened the leather-bound ledger in her hands, revealing a birth certificate pasted inside the front cover, complete with official government stamps and family seals.
"I am not just an archivist, Elena," Clara whispered, looking up with eyes full of decades of buried resentment. "I am William Sterling’s eldest daughter. David and Marcus’s half-sister. And my birthright was stolen from me before I could even walk."
Before Elena could process the catastrophic revelation, Clara reached into her pocket, pulled out a small electronic master override device, and pressed the central red button.
