Chapter 7 - The Federal Warrant

The heavy double doors smashed against the wainscoting with a force that rattled the crystal chandelier overhead. Everyone in the foyer jerked their heads toward the entrance.

Framed in the open doorway stood three armed federal marshals in tactical gear, their navy windbreakers clearly marked with bold white letters: FBI - FINANCIAL CRIMES DIVISION. Leading them was a tall, stern-faced woman with iron-grey hair pulled back into a severe bun, holding a blue-backed legal document in her hand.

Julian Vance’s mocking smile vanished instantly, his hand freezing mid-air while twirling his gold pen. Beatrice let out a shrill gasp, clutching her chest as her knees wobbled beneath her.

"Julian Vance," the lead agent called out, her voice echoing authoritatively across the marble floor. "And Arthur Sterling. You are both under federal arrest for wire fraud, corporate racketeering, and international money laundering."

Arthur stumbled backward, tripping over the scattered pieces of Lily’s torn school certificate, and landed flat on his back with a loud grunt. "This is a mistake!" he shrieked, flailing his arms like a trapped beetle. "We have legal protection! Vance Holdings owns the debt!"

"Vance Holdings was flagged for illicit offshore asset-stripping thirty minutes ago," the agent replied coldly, striding across the threshold with heavy, purposeful boots. Two marshals flanked her, moving with practiced efficiency to secure the perimeter.

Julian’s face went cold and hard. He didn't panic, but his eyes narrowed dangerously as he looked at the federal agent, then flicked his gaze toward Elena. "You set this up," Julian said, his voice dropping to a low, venomous hiss. "You didn't just bring an iron box. You used yourself as bait to keep us in one place while the indictment cleared."

Elena kept her arm protectively around Lily, watching the scene unfold with a calm, chilling composure. "I told you, Julian. The Sterling empire doesn't belong to parasites. And neither do the people who fund them."

One of the marshals stepped forward, grabbing Arthur by the shoulders and hauling him roughly to his feet. Arthur whimpered, his dark grey shirt tearing slightly at the seam as he was shoved against the mahogany console table, right beside the open iron box containing his father's condemning voice.

"You can't do this!" Beatrice screamed, stepping in front of Julian as if to shield him. "Do you know who we are? We built this city!"

"You built nothing, Mrs. Sterling," the lead agent said sharply, pulling a pair of steel handcuffs from her belt and stepping toward Julian. "You inherited a legacy and turned it into a criminal enterprise. Put your hands behind your back, Mr. Vance."

Julian didn't resist, but as the cold steel clicked around his wrists, he turned his head slowly to fixate his dark, piercing eyes on Elena. A slow, chilling smirk crept back onto his lips despite the cuffs.

"You think arresting me solves your problem, Elena?" Julian spoke softly, just loud enough for her to hear over Arthur’s frantic sobbing. "You think my consortium is the only player in this game?"

Elena’s eyes narrowed. "What are you talking about?"

May you like

Julian chuckled, his shoulders shaking slightly as the marshals began to lead him toward the open doors. "I’m just a hired gun, Mrs. Sterling. The person who really ordered the destruction of your husband’s life... is still sitting inside this house."
