Chapter 14 - The Final Breach

The heavy mahogany double doors shattered inward with a concussive blast, sending heavy wood splinters flying across the marble floor like shrapnel.

Clara shrieked, stumbling backward as a blinding flashbang grenade rolled across the threshold, detonating with a blinding white light and a deafening roar that shook the entire foundation of the grand estate.

Marcus threw his hands over his ears, dropping to his knees as the disorienting shockwave hit him. The revolver slipped from Clara’s ringing fingers, clattering loudly against the marble tile.

Before the smoke could even begin to clear, tactical boots pounded across the broken timber. Half a dozen heavily armed federal agents swarmed the foyer, their assault rifles raised and laser sights painting red dots across Marcus, Clara, and a paralyzed Beatrice.

"FBI! Don't move! Hands where I can see them!" the lead agent roared, the same stern-faced woman from earlier striding through the smoke with her badge held high.

Elena pulled Lily down instantly, covering the little girl’s head with her body and shielding her from the flying debris and chaos.

Clara, coughing violently from the smoke, lunged desperately across the floor toward her dropped revolver. "You won't take everything I built!" she screamed, her fingers inches away from the cold steel.

Before Clara's fingers could wrap around the grip, a heavy tactical boot came down hard over her hand, pinning it firmly to the marble.

The lead agent towered over Clara, kicking the gun far out of reach into the dark corner of the room. "Clara Vance, Marcus Sterling, you are both under arrest for conspiracy, racketeering, and the premeditated murder of David Sterling."

Two agents moved in instantly, yanking Clara to her feet and slamming steel handcuffs onto her wrists with practiced brutality. Another team hauled Marcus up by his cashmere collar, ignoring his muffled protests as they slapped cuffs on him as well.

Beatrice crumpled completely, sliding down the grand staircase banister until she hit the floor, sobbing uncontrollably into her hands as her entire empire vanished into the smoke.

Elena slowly rose to her feet, helping Lily up as well. She brushed the dust off her navy blue suit, her breathing calm, steady, and utterly victorious.

The lead agent walked over to Elena, extending a hand to steady her. "Are you alright, Mrs. Sterling? We intercepted the false rerouting order just in time."

"We're fine, Agent," Elena replied firmly, shaking the agent's hand. She reached down, picked up the iron box from the console, and tucked her briefcase securely under her arm.

As the agents hauled Marcus and Clara toward the shattered entryway, Marcus turned his head back, his eyes burning with a final, desperate hatred.

"You haven't won, Elena," Marcus spat out, blood trickling from a small cut on his forehead. "The real documents aren't in this house. They're locked in a vault across the ocean, and without the master key, you'll never access the true offshore reserves. You inherited an empty shell!"

Elena looked down at him with absolute pity, holding up the heavy brass key by its braided red cord.

"You keep forgetting, Marcus," Elena said softly. "I didn't need your master key. Your father gave me the key to your entire life before he died."

She turned away, taking Lily’s small hand in hers, ready to walk out the shattered doors.

Just as they reached the threshold, the grandfather clock behind them suddenly gave one final, violent shudder, its internal panel popping open to reveal something unexpected hidden deep within the gears.
