Chapter 12 - Darkness Falls

The sudden plunge into absolute darkness swallowed the grand foyer whole. The crystal chandelier went dead instantly, the wall sconces flickered out, and even the grandfather clock’s heavy mechanical grinding ground to a sudden, permanent halt.

Lily let out a sharp gasp of fright, her small hands frantically grabbing onto the fabric of Elena’s navy suit blazer. "Mama! I can't see anything! It's too dark!"

"Stay close to me, Lily. Don't let go of my hand," Elena commanded, her voice fierce and steady despite the sudden terror gripping the room. With her left hand, she pulled Lily tight against her side, while her right hand kept its firm, unyielding pressure on the emergency broadcast button of her satellite phone.

In the pitch-black void, the sound of slow, calculated footsteps echoed against the marble floor. They weren't coming from one direction; they seemed to be echoing from all sides, bouncing off the high vaulted ceilings.

"You can hold onto that little phone button all you want, Elena," Clara’s voice rang out from the darkness, sounding terrifyingly close, yet impossible to pinpoint. "The moment the power grid went down, the localized frequency jammer activated. Your satellite signal isn't reaching Geneva. It's not reaching anyone."

Elena’s heart skipped a beat. She quickly glanced at the screen of her phone in the dim ambient light filtering through the high foyer windows. The signal bars were completely dead, replaced by a flashing red warning icon: SIGNAL BLOCKED - OFFLINE.

Marcus’s mocking laughter echoed from the stairs above. "Did you really think we wouldn't anticipate your little digital insurance policy, Elena? You're smart, but you're playing a high-stakes game against people who invented corporate warfare before you were even born."

Beatrice’s voice trembled from somewhere near the banister, sounding panicked and breathless. "Clara... Marcus... stop this! There's no need for more violence! We have the house, we have the company—just let them leave!"

"Silence, Mother," Clara snapped sharply, her voice like cracking ice. "You sold my mother out thirty years ago, banishing us to the servant's quarters while these two golden boys inherited the world. My debt is finally being collected."

Elena slid her hand down her blazer, her fingers closing around the cold metal casing of a small, tactical flashlight she always carried in her briefcase pocket. With a silent flick of her thumb, a blinding beam of white LED light cut through the darkness, illuminating the center of the foyer.

The beam swept across the marble floor, catching Clara standing just five feet away, holding a small silver signal jammer in one hand and a heavy, vintage revolver in the other.

Clara squinted against the bright LED light, her face twisting into an ugly snarl as she raised the barrel of the gun directly toward Elena’s chest.

"Put the phone down, Elena," Clara ordered, her finger resting lightly on the trigger. "Or the next certificate I tear up won't be made of paper."
