Chapter 13 - The Barrel of a Gun

The bright beam of Elena’s tactical flashlight illuminated the cold, steady glare in Clara’s eyes, as well as the heavy steel barrel of the vintage revolver pointed directly at her chest.

Elena didn't drop her phone. Instead, her thumb remained locked on the emergency broadcast override, though the red flashing warning icon on the screen reminded her that the signal jammer was currently cutting off all outside communication.

"You're willing to kill me in cold blood, Clara?" Elena asked, her voice dangerously calm, projecting absolute authority despite the lethal threat inches away. "You think shooting an unarmed mother in her own foyer will secure your empire? The federal marshals already have Arthur and Julian in custody. The moment they realize I haven't checked in, they'll be back through these doors with a SWAT team."

Clara took a slow, calculated step forward, the revolver steady in her grip. "The marshals won't be coming back, Elena. Marcus made sure their transport received a rerouting order to a secure facility across town. By the time anyone figures out where you are, this estate will be legally foreclosed, and you and your daughter will be registered as missing persons who fled the country."

Marcus descended the remaining steps from the darkness, joining Clara in the spotlight of Elena’s flashlight. His earlier panic was entirely gone, replaced by a cold, victorious sneer.

"Mother always said we should have dealt with David’s wife years ago," Marcus muttered, stepping up beside Clara. "You just couldn't leave well enough alone, could you, Elena? You had to bring your little girl here, flaunting your fake righteousness."

Lily pressed her face tightly against Elena’s waist, her small shoulders shaking with silent, terrified sobs. "Mama... I want to go home. I'm scared."

Elena’s heart shattered at the sound of her daughter's voice, but her resolve hardened into solid steel. She lowered the flashlight slightly, blinding Clara with the intense glare, and stepped forward—placing herself even more squarely between the gun barrel and her child.

"You want the company, Clara? You want the house?" Elena challenged, her voice ringing out with fierce, unyielding power. "Take it. Sign the papers, transfer the assets, do whatever you want. But let my daughter walk out of these doors right now."

Clara let out a cold, humorless laugh. "You think I'm stupid enough to leave loose ends, Elena? You know about the audit, you know about the brake line, and you know about the ledger. Neither of you is walking out of this house alive."

Clara’s finger tightened around the trigger, the hammer of the revolver pulling back with a sharp, terrifying click that echoed off the marble walls.

Before the trigger could be fully pulled, the massive mahogany double doors behind Clara suddenly exploded inward with a deafening crash, showering the foyer in splintered wood and flying debris.
