Chapter 5 - The Confession Inside

The lock clicked with a heavy, deeply satisfying thunk that resonated through the cavernous foyer. Beatrice froze, her hand still clutching her bruised arm, while Arthur stood paralyzed by the bottom of the grand staircase. Neither of them dared to breathe as Elena slowly lifted the heavy iron lid of the box.

Inside rested a stack of thick parchment documents, bound together by a black leather strap, alongside a small, silver-plated microcassette recorder. The device looked archaic in the modern world of digital files, but its presence carried an undeniable, crushing weight.

Elena reached in with steady fingers and picked up the microcassette recorder. She pressed the eject button, revealing that the tape inside was fully intact and untouched.

"Do you recognize this model?" Elena asked, her eyes locking onto Arthur’s sweating face. "Your father bought a dozen of these back in ninety-eight. He didn't trust digital backups either. He wanted human voices recorded, unedited, and preserved."

Arthur swallowed hard, his throat working convulsively. "That... that's just an old dictation machine. The tape inside is probably blank or degraded by magnetic fields over the decades."

"Is it?" Elena raised a single, perfectly sculpted eyebrow. She pressed the play button and flipped the tiny speaker switch to maximum volume.

For a second, there was only static hissing from the small speaker. Then, a sharp, gravelly voice echoed off the marble walls, filling the grand foyer with the unmistakable ghost of patriarch William Sterling.

"If you are listening to this tape, Arthur, it means my worst fears have been realized," the recording boomed, the old man’s voice stern, booming, and filled with disappointment. "You lack the spine and the honor to run this company. You have been skimming from the subsidiary accounts to fund your gambling debts in Macau."

Beatrice let out a sharp, strangled cry, her hands flying to cover her ears. "Stop it! Turn that infernal thing off right now!"

Elena didn't move a muscle. She let the tape continue to roll, her expression completely impassive as the dead patriarch systematically dismantled his own son's career.

"And if Beatrice is helping you cover it up," the recorded voice continued mercilessly, "then she is just as culpable. I have legally transferred all primary voting rights of Sterling Industries, along with this estate, to my late grandson David’s direct bloodline. Should anything happen to David, his wife Elena becomes the sole executor with absolute veto power."

The tape clicked as it reached the end of the side, the automatic stop hissing softly into the stunned silence of the room.

Elena slowly lowered the recorder, her dark gaze piercing right through Arthur’s failing facade. "Your father knew you inside and out, Arthur. He knew you were a parasite."

Arthur dropped his head into his hands, his knees finally buckling as he slid down the wooden banister until he was sitting on the bottom step, completely defeated.

"It's over," Arthur whispered into his palms, his voice hollow and broken. "We lost everything."

"Not quite everything," a cold, unfamiliar voice echoed from the shadows of the arched hallway behind the stairs.

Elena spun around instantly, her protective instincts flaring as a tall, elegant man stepped out from the darkness, wearing an expensive tailored suit and a smile that didn't reach his cold eyes.
