Chapter 2 - The Mother's Vow

Elena’s arms wrapped fiercely around Lily’s small frame, pulling the trembling child into the safety of her chest. The silk of her bow blouse rustled as she shielded her daughter completely from the bitter chill of the grand foyer.
Beatrice shifted her weight, the pearls around her neck clicking softly against one another. "You are making a scene, Elena. This household has standards, and stray emotions are strictly forbidden."
Arthur uncrossed his arms, taking a slow step forward. "You should have taught the girl her place weeks ago, Elena. Bringing her here was a tactical error. Arthur Sterling never tolerates dead weight in this empire."
Elena slowly rose to her feet, keeping Lily securely behind her right leg. Her dark eyes locked onto Beatrice with an intensity that made the older woman flinch slightly. The air in the foyer grew heavy, charged with years of unspoken resentment and buried betrayal.
"Don’t touch my child!" Elena’s voice rang out, sharp and absolute, cutting through the silence like a scalpel. She didn't blink as she stared down her former mother-in-law.
Beatrice raised her chin, her aristocratic facade slipping just enough to reveal a flash of genuine panic. "You forget whose roof you are standing under, Elena. Without the Sterling trust fund, you and your little bastard are nothing on the streets."
Elena let out a cold, humorless laugh that echoed off the marble pillars. She reached down slowly and picked up her heavy leather briefcase from the floor. Her fingers popped the brass latches with a loud, mechanical snap.
"Trust funds?" Elena asked, her tone dripping with lethal sarcasm. "You honestly believe this empire still belongs to you, Beatrice?"
Arthur frowned, stepping closer to peer over Beatrice’s shoulder. "What game are you playing, Elena? Hand over the portfolio and leave quietly before we call security to throw you out."
Elena ignored him entirely. She slid her hand deep into the velvet-lined compartment of the briefcase and pulled out a thick, yellowed manila folder tied with a faded red ribbon. The paper was crinkled with age, bearing the official red wax seal of the Sterling family's primary legal counsel from three decades ago.
"This isn't a game, Arthur," Elena whispered, her gaze shifting to fixate on the man who had signed away his soul for a corner office. "This is the final audit."

She untied the red ribbon with agonizing slowness, letting the fabric flutter to the floor. As she opened the folder, a single photograph slid out and landed face-up on the marble tile, revealing a signature that made Arthur turn instantly pale.
