Chapter 9

The morning sun cast pale, slanting rays through the towering floor-to-ceiling windows of Julian’s penthouse office, illuminating floating dust motes in the quiet air. The opulence of the space felt hollow now, stripped of any warmth by the events of the previous evening. Julian sat behind his heavy mahogany desk, his fingers steepled beneath his chin as he stared at the glowing monitors displaying real-time financial updates from Vance Enterprises.
With Arthur behind bars and the board of directors thrown into utter panic, the conglomerate’s stock prices were plummeting rapidly. Vulture investors circled like sharks in open water, eager to pick apart the corporate carcass. However, Julian’s primary focus was not on saving his former partner’s empire, but on locating Clara—the missing auditor whose digital breadcrumbs had ultimately saved his life at the wedding reception.
A soft knock interrupted his intense concentration. The heavy oak door swung open, and little Lily stepped into the sprawling office, accompanied by Detective Miller. The little girl wore a simple yellow sweater and jeans today, looking far more like a normal child than the solemn savior of the previous night, though her eyes retained an intense, observant maturity.
“Julian,” Detective Miller greeted professionally, carrying a thick manila folder under her arm. “We ran forensic checks on the cloud server linked to Clara’s old encrypted communication protocol. We found a secondary ping originating from an abandoned industrial storage facility near the harbor.”
Julian stood up immediately, the chair rolling back against the Persian rug with a muted thud. “An industrial facility? Whose property is it?”
“Registered under a shell corporation completely controlled by Arthur Vance,” Detective Miller replied grimly, opening the folder to reveal blueprint schematics and aerial photographs. “If Clara is still being held there, time is running out. Vance’s legal team is already attempting to file emergency injunctions to freeze all secondary accounts, which means his associates outside might try to scrub the location clean before we can execute a legal search warrant.”
Julian didn't hesitate. He reached across the desk, grabbing his car keys and a heavy leather-bound ledger. “We aren't waiting for a warrant. I’m coming with you.”
Lily stepped forward, her small hand clutching a portable tablet device that blinked with a steady green tracking light. “I can guide you,” she insisted, her voice small but entirely unyielding. “Clara’s tablet is still connected to my backup receiver. I know the exact frequency of her signal.”

Detective Miller looked at Julian, silently questioning the wisdom of bringing a child along on a potentially dangerous rescue operation. Julian looked down into Lily’s fierce, determined eyes and saw the exact same unyielding spirit that had kept her brave in the grand ballroom. He nodded slowly.
“Stay close to me, Lily,” Julian instructed sternly, his voice carrying absolute protection. “We finish what we started.”
