Chapter 4

A low murmur rippled through the gathered crowd like wind sweeping across a field of dry grass. The illusion of perfection had shattered beyond repair, and the guests were beginning to realize that they were unwitting witnesses to a profound public scandal. Whispers bounced from table to table, speculative glances darting between the icy groom, the panic-stricken bride, and the small, brave girl standing quietly amid the spilled wine and broken crystal.
Elena desperately tried to regain her composure, smoothing the lace folds of her expensive gown with trembling fingers. She forced a fragile, unconvincing smile to her lips, though her eyes remained wide with absolute terror.
“Julian, please,” Elena whispered, her voice laced with manufactured distress as she reached out a tentative hand toward his black tuxedo sleeve. “You cannot possibly believe what a disturbed child and a manipulated video are implying. It’s a deepfake. Anyone with basic software can fabricate something like this nowadays. Someone is trying to ruin our special night out of pure jealousy.”
Julian did not flinch away from her touch, but he did not welcome it either. He simply looked down at her outstretched hand, noting the fine tremor in her manicured fingers. The excuse of digital fabrication held no weight against the undeniable cold reality he felt radiating from her posture.
“A deepfake?” Julian repeated, his tone dripping with quiet sarcasm. He turned the smartphone slightly so the glowing screen illuminated her panicked face once more. “And did a deepfake also place the identical amber vial in the hidden pocket of your dressing room vanity, Elena? Because security logs show you were the only person with a key to that room for the last six hours.”
The blood drained entirely from Elena’s face, leaving her looking ghostly beneath the warm lighting of the ballroom. Her mouth opened slightly, but no words came out. The sophisticated facade she had meticulously constructed over months of planning crumbled into dust in a matter of seconds.

Little Lily stepped back a fraction, seeking the protective proximity of Julian’s tall frame. The child looked up at the towering groom with an expression of quiet vindication, her mission accomplished, yet the heavy atmosphere in the room suggested the danger was far from over.
Julian pocketed the smartphone, the glowing screen winking out of existence as the case snapped shut. He surveyed the crowded ballroom, his gaze sweeping over stunned family members and wide-eyed business associates. The wedding cake sat untouched in the distance, a towering white monument to a lie. The toast that was supposed to seal their union had instead exposed a dark web of betrayal, and Julian knew that uncovering the poisoned drink was only the very first step toward a much deeper, more dangerous truth.
