Chapter 7

The heavy oak doors of the ballroom swung open with a resounding bang, admitting not the expected local police force, but a tall, slender woman with striking blond hair and sharp, analytical eyes. Detective Sarah Miller strode into the hall with an air of absolute authority, her dark trench coat swirling around her ankles. She bypassed the stunned guests without a second glance, marching straight toward the bar where Julian and Arthur stood locked in a tense standoff.

Arthur’s face turned the color of ash as Detective Miller flashed a gold shield directly into his line of sight.

“Arthur Vance, you are under arrest for conspiracy to commit murder, corporate embezzlement, and wire fraud,” Detective Miller announced crisply, her voice cutting cleanly through the ambient murmurs of the room. She gestured to two uniformed officers who immediately flanked Arthur, securing his arms behind his back with heavy steel cuffs.

Julian watched the arrest unfold with a stoic expression, though a profound sense of closure washed over him. He turned his attention back to the head table, where Elena sat sobbing uncontrollably in her ruined wedding dress. Detective Miller followed his gaze, noting the trembling bride and the small blond girl standing nearby.

“And you, Mrs. Vance—or should I say, accomplice to attempted poisoning?” Detective Miller addressed Elena, stepping closer to the head table. “Your signed confessions and digital paper trail were forwarded to my precinct less than ten minutes ago via an encrypted cloud link. You have a lot of explaining to do.”

Elena looked up, her mascara running in dark streaks down her pale cheeks. She didn't deny the charges; the weight of the undeniable evidence crushed any remaining instinct to fight. Instead, her tear-filled eyes drifted toward little Lily, who looked back at her with a chilling lack of emotion that mirrored Julian’s composure.

“She told me… she told me nobody would get hurt,” Elena choked out, pointing a trembling, manicured finger toward Arthur as he was being escorted past them in handcuffs. “He said it was just a temporary sedative to force Julian to sign the merger documents while incapacitated. He promised me financial security, safety… everything.”

“Greed has a funny way of blinding people to the obvious destination,” Julian remarked coldly, his voice devoid of pity. He walked back to the head table and knelt down slightly so he was at eye level with little Lily. He reached out, resting a gentle, appreciative hand on the little girl’s shoulder. “You saved my life, Lily. More importantly, you brought justice to someone very dear to us both.”

Lily offered a small, solemn nod, finally letting the immense tension drain from her small frame. The ghost of her missing sister could finally rest, knowing the truth had finally come to light in the most public way imaginable.
