Chapter 5

The glittering chandeliers overhead seemed to dim as Julian’s gaze swept coldly across the crowded ballroom, eventually locking onto a figure standing near the mahogany bar at the far end of the hall. Arthur Vance, Julian’s long-time business partner and financial advisor, stood with a glass of champagne delicately balanced between his fingers. Unlike the rest of the shocked attendees, Arthur’s expression was disturbingly calm, a faint, almost imperceptible smirk playing at the corners of his mouth.
Julian’s mind raced, connecting the fragmented puzzle pieces with terrifying speed. Elena had poured the liquid, but Arthur was the one who had financed the lavish wedding, orchestrated the extensive prenuptial agreements, and subtly encouraged Julian to merge his vast corporate holdings with Elena’s family estate just weeks prior. The poisoned drink was not merely an act of personal malice or marital betrayal; it was a calculated corporate execution disguised as a domestic tragedy.
“You knew,” Julian stated aloud, his voice cutting through the heavy silence as he pointed a steady finger across the expansive marble floor directly at Arthur.
The guests gasped, turning their collective attention away from the head table to follow Julian’s accusing gesture. Arthur did not flinch. He slowly took a sip of his champagne, setting the crystal flute down on the bar before adjusting the lapels of his immaculate designer suit with infuriating nonchalance.
“Julian, my dear friend, you are letting the shock of the moment cloud your judgment,” Arthur called out smoothly, his voice carrying effortlessly across the silent hall. “Your bride panicked under pressure, clearly. But do not drag me into your domestic disputes just because your marriage is falling apart before the first dance has even begun.”
Elena looked back and forth between Julian and Arthur, her eyes darting like a trapped animal’s. The silent communication passing between the two supposed adversaries on the screen moments earlier confirmed what Julian already suspected: Elena was merely a pawn, manipulated and coerced into carrying out the physical act of sabotage, while Arthur stood to inherit the staggering corporate empire upon Julian’s sudden, untimely demise.

“The amber vial, the private access logs, and the financial trail leading directly from offshore accounts controlled by Vance Enterprises to Elena’s personal overseas holdings,” Julian recited coldly, stepping forward from the head table, his stride purposeful and menacing. “It’s all on the secure cloud backup attached to this very phone. The video Lily recorded wasn’t just of the drink being swapped; it also captured the audio of your phone call plotting this entire takeover, Arthur.”
Arthur’s calm facade finally fractured. The smooth color in his cheeks shifted to a sickly, pale grey as he realized the depth of the surveillance trap he had unwittingly walked right into.
