Chapter 8

With Arthur Vance in federal custody and Elena detained by local authorities for formal questioning, the magnificent ballroom slowly emptied of its bewildered guests. Flashbulbs ceased firing, and the whispered gossip was replaced by the heavy, echoing silence of an empty venue. The multi-million-dollar wedding reception had transformed into a sterile crime scene, guarded by local police officers securing physical evidence, including the shattered crystal wine glass and the poisoned goblet.
Julian stood alone near the center of the polished marble floor, staring down at the dark amber stain that still marred the pristine white stone. The illusion of his perfect corporate and personal life had been completely dismantled in less than an hour. Yet, rather than feeling defeated, he felt an overwhelming sense of clarity. Every hidden alliance, every backroom deal, and every fabricated friendship was now laid bare before him.
Detective Miller approached him, holding a sealed evidence bag containing the smartphone Lily had carried into the fray.
“You knew something was wrong before today, didn't you, Julian?” Detective Miller asked quietly, standing beside him and observing the stain on the floor. “People in your position don't install high-level encrypted monitoring software on their wedding day by sheer coincidence.”
Julian exhaled slowly, watching his breath mist slightly in the cool air of the overly air-conditioned hall. “I received an anonymous digital warning three days ago, containing financial spreadsheets and encrypted audio files. It pointed directly to Vance Enterprises siphoning funds from our subsidiary accounts. But I didn't know the extent of the physical danger until Lily approached our table tonight.”
“That little girl is remarkably brave,” Detective Miller noted, glancing over at Lily, who was currently sitting quietly on a velvet chair near the exit, drinking a glass of apple juice provided by a sympathetic female officer. “She walked right into a lion's den with a digital timer counting down to your demise.”
“She carried the memory of her older sister,” Julian corrected softly, his jaw tightening. “Clara was my chief financial auditor. She vanished three weeks ago after threatening to expose Arthur’s illegal asset transfers. Everyone else assumed she took a massive payoff and fled the country. Everyone except Lily.”

The pieces of the puzzle clicked violently into place for the detective. Clara hadn't fled; she had been silenced, and her younger sister had secretly inherited her digital lifeline, waiting for the exact moment when the conspirators would feel untouchable—right at the altar, during the celebratory toast where all eyes were looking elsewhere.
Julian straightened his broad shoulders, buttoning his black tuxedo jacket with renewed purpose. The wedding was over, but the war for his empire and true justice had only just begun.
