Chapter 10

The salty air of the industrial harbor stung their nostrils as Detective Miller’s unmarked vehicle pulled silently into the overgrown gravel lot surrounding Warehouse 42. The massive corrugated metal building stood dark and imposing against the grey backdrop of the crashing ocean waves, appearing entirely abandoned from the outside. Yet, according to Lily’s tracking tablet, a faint, localized power grid was active deep within the basement levels.

Julian stepped out of the car first, his eyes scanning the perimeter for any signs of movement or hidden surveillance cameras. The early morning fog rolled heavily across the asphalt, dampening the sound of their footsteps as they approached the rusted side entrance.

“The signal is coming from directly beneath the primary loading dock,” Lily whispered softly, holding her tablet tightly against her chest as the green tracking dot blinked rhythmically on the screen. “Clara is down there. I can feel it.”

Detective Miller drew her service pistol, holding it close to her chest as she signaled for Julian to stay behind her. “Stay behind me and watch the exit, Julian. If anyone tries to flee through the service corridors, do not engage them alone.”

Julian nodded, though his muscles remained coiled and tense, ready for action. He hadn't survived years in the cutthroat corporate arena by standing safely on the sidelines. They slipped through the heavy metal door into the cavernous darkness of the warehouse interior, the scent of damp concrete and old machine oil filling the air.

Navigating by the faint glow of emergency lights, they descended a steep set of metal stairs that led down into the sub-basement levels. The ambient sound of dripping water echoed through the subterranean corridor, punctuated only by the soft, steady hum of an active mainframe computer system tucked away in an interior room.

Detective Miller reached the heavy reinforced door at the end of the corridor, testing the handle. It was unlocked, swinging open with a faint metallic squeak. Inside, the room was brightly lit by rows of server racks humming busily. Tied securely to an office chair in the center of the room was a pale, exhausted young woman with blond hair matching Lily’s—Clara.

Her eyes fluttered open as the sudden light hit her face. She looked up in utter disbelief, gasping for air as Julian rushed forward, pulling a pocketknife from his suit lining to slice through the heavy zip-ties binding her wrists.

“You… you came,” Clara whispered hoarsely, tears of profound relief spilling over her tired cheeks as Lily broke away from the group and ran straight into her older sister’s welcoming embrace.
