Chapter 8 - The Autopsy Exhumation

The living room seemed to shrink as the implications of the incoming encrypted message settled over the room like an iron weight. Agent Miller closed the distance between them in two strides, his professional detachment momentarily replaced by urgent federal investigator instincts.

“Show me that transmission, Captain,”

Miller ordered, his eyes darting across the secure terminal display on Elena’s encrypted phone.

Elena tilted the screen toward him. The text was terse, generated by the Department of Defense Medical Review Board following a routine cross-check of her mother’s probate files against military health registry archives. Sarah Vance had not merely succumbed to natural heart failure as the local coroner’s certificate had claimed eighteen months ago. The toxicology screening, preserved in a sealed military medical vault during her final months of care, contained anomalous levels of synthetic paralytics—compounds accessible only through restricted military procurement channels.

“Synthetic neurotoxins,”

Agent Miller murmured, reading the encrypted notes aloud.

“Administered over a sustained period. This wasn’t just financial fraud, Captain Vance. This was a targeted medical homicide.”

Olivia, still huddled on the floor near the shattered champagne glass, covered her mouth with both hands, letting out a stifled, shuddering scream. The illusion that she was merely an innocent beneficiary caught in a petty family feud shattered completely. She looked up at Elena with wide, terror-filled eyes, realizing she had been sharing a roof and celebrating champagne with a man who was now a prime suspect in a murder investigation.

“I didn’t know,”

Olivia sobbed, her voice breaking into a ragged whisper.

“I swear to God, I thought Aunt Sarah died peacefully in her sleep! Uncle Arthur told us her heart just gave out!”

Elena didn’t look down at her cousin. Her gaze remained fixed on the digital screen, her mind racing through the chronology of her mother’s final weeks. She had been deployed on a classified mission halfway across the globe when the emergency message arrived reporting her mother’s sudden death. Arthur had handled all the funeral arrangements within forty-eight hours, refusing an autopsy under the guise of respecting Sarah’s final wishes for a quick, private cremation.

“He cremated her,”

Elena whispered, the horrifying realization dawning with brutal clarity.

“That’s why he rushed the service. He didn't want a forensic pathologist examining the body.”

Agent Miller tapped his comm-link, speaking into the secure radio clipped to his lapel.

“Dispatch, this is Miller. I need an immediate hold placed on the municipal cemetery records for Sarah Vance. Initiate an emergency exhumation warrant for the burial plot immediately. We need to check what was actually placed in that casket.”

The radio crackled with a crisp confirmation. Across the room, Olivia let out a hysterical laugh that sounded dangerously close to a breakdown. She scrambled backward until her back pressed hard against the base of a packing box, her fingers clawing at the cardboard.

“A casket?”

Olivia shrieked, her voice pitching upward in sheer panic.
