Chapter 4 - The Audit Trail

The fluorescent lights of the hallway flickered faintly, casting long, erratic shadows across the polished floorboards. Arthur stared at the flash drive in Elena’s hand, the color draining entirely from his weathered face. The bureaucratic machinery he had manipulated for over a year had just collided with federal oversight, and he knew enough about military law to recognize a court-martial waiting to happen in civilian court.

“You don’t know what you’re meddling in, Elena,”

Arthur said, his voice dropping to a desperate, gravelly whisper.

“This isn’t just about a house. There are debts, liabilities, and investments tied up in this property that you cannot possibly comprehend. If you blow this open, you’ll ruin the family name.”

Elena took a slow, deliberate step forward, forcing Arthur to take an involuntary step back. Her boots clicked sharply against the wood, a metronome of impending justice.

“The family name was ruined the moment you decided to steal from a deployed soldier,”

Elena said, her voice steady and chillingly polite.

“You thought I’d come home broken, compliant, and willing to sign over my birthright just to have a roof over my head. You miscalculated.”

Olivia nervously clutched the gold-sealed document to her chest, her blonde hair falling wildly around her shoulders as she looked frantically between her uncle and her cousin. The veneer of aristocratic confidence had completely evaporated, replaced by the cold sweat of realization.

“Uncle Arthur, tell her she’s bluffing,”

Olivia pleaded, her voice trembling.

“She’s just trying to scare us out so she can sell the property to developers!”

Elena didn’t bother looking at Olivia. Her eyes remained locked on her father, watching the micro-expressions of panic ripple across his face—the twitch of his left eyelid, the shallow, rapid breathing of a man trapped in a corner of his own making.

“I don’t need to bluff, Olivia,”

Elena said softly without breaking eye contact with Arthur.

“Federal investigators don’t bluff. They execute warrants.”

Before either Arthur or Olivia could formulate a response, the sharp, authoritative rap of knuckles against the front double doors echoed through the villa. Everyone froze. The heavy oak doors had been left slightly ajar after Elena’s dramatic entrance.

Arthur’s head snapped toward the entryway.

“Who is that?”

he demanded, though the sinking dread in his stomach already provided the answer.

Elena turned her head slightly toward the foyer, a faint, humorless smile touching her lips.

“That would be Special Agent Miller from the Department of Defense Financial Crimes Division,”

Elena announced clearly, raising her voice so it carried to the foyer.

“He’s here to audit the estate transfer.”

Olivia gasped, dropping the champagne glass she had been holding. The crystal shattered loudly against the hardwood floor, sending a spray of sparkling shards across the room. Arthur lunged forward, grabbing Elena by the wrist in a desperate, reckless bid to silence her before the agents stepped inside.

“You treacherous little—!”

May you like

Arthur started, his grip tightening angrily.
