Chapter 10 - The Crypt of Secrets

The coastal wind whipped across the manicured lawns of the municipal cemetery, carrying the sharp scent of salt water and damp earth. Agent Miller stared at the clipboard, his jaw set in a tight, grim line as he processed the horrific mathematics of the coroner’s report. A standard burial vault weighing barely sixty pounds meant only one thing: the funeral they had all mourned eighteen months ago was an elaborate, theatrical deception designed to cover up something far more sinister than financial embezzlement.

“Get the backhoes moving,”

Agent Miller ordered sharply, his voice slicing through the wind.

“Break the seal on the outer vault immediately.”

The heavy machinery roared to life, plumes of black diesel exhaust billowing into the bright afternoon sky. The massive steel bucket slammed into the loose dirt around the concrete vault, scraping away the remaining layers of topsoil with bone-jarring thuds. Elena stood unmoving at the edge of the excavation site, her dark blue military uniform standing in stark contrast to the churning brown earth. Her hands were balled into tight fists inside the pockets of her jacket, her fingernails digging deep into her palms to ground herself against the rising tide of fury and grief.

The coroner stood beside her, nervously clicking his ballpoint pen against his metal clipboard.

“Captain Vance, I must advise you that whatever we find down there might not—”

“I am a military officer,”

Elena interrupted, her voice entirely devoid of hesitation.

“I’ve seen the worst of what humanity has to offer. I can handle whatever is in that vault.”

With a deafening crunch of breaking concrete, the heavy hydraulic arm of the backhoe cracked open the reinforced outer shell of the burial vault. A plume of stale, trapped air hissed upward, carrying the faint, unmistakable scent of aged paper and industrial plastic rather than the organic decay of a human body.

The machine operator killed the engine, the sudden silence of the graveyard feeling almost deafening.

Agent Miller stepped cautiously to the edge of the pit, clicking on a heavy-duty tactical flashlight and angling the beam down into the dark cavity of the broken concrete vault.

“Give me a light down there,”

Miller muttered, leaning further over the precipice.

Elena stepped up beside him, peering down into the depths of the grave. The beam of the flashlight cut through the dust motes, illuminating the interior of the vault. There was no silk-lined mahogany casket resting inside. Instead, stacked neatly against the back wall of the concrete shell, were dozens of heavy-duty military-grade waterproof ammunition crates, stamped with serial numbers and federal seals.

Agent Miller blinked in sheer disbelief, his eyes widening as he slowly lowered the flashlight.

“Ammunition?”

Miller whispered, turning to look at Elena in absolute shock.

“Your father buried an entire military armory in a civilian cemetery plot under your mother’s name?”

Elena stared down at the crates, her mind racing at light speed. The financial fraud, the fake medical reports, the hurried cremation, and now an illegal underground weapons cache hidden in a graveyard. This wasn't just about stealing a house or looting an inheritance. Arthur Vance was running a massive, covert logistics ring right out from under the nose of the Department of Defense.

“Not just an armory,”

Elena whispered coldly, her eyes locking onto the specific serial prefix stenciled onto the nearest crate.

“Those are classified ordnance crates missing from my own logistics battalion overseas.”

Before Agent Miller could respond, his secure radio erupted with a burst of static and an urgent, breathless dispatch from the federal field office downtown.
