Chapter 13 - The Final Keystroke

The blue glow of the server mainframes cast an eerie, clinical light across the chaotic room. Arthur Vance stood frozen with his trembling fingers hovering mere millimeters above the master enter key of the terminal. On the towering overhead display, the system wipe progress bar blinked menacingly at 94% Complete. Every second that ticked by burned away another layer of the financial trail and evidence needed to unravel his massive criminal enterprise.
“Step away from the console, Arthur,”
Elena commanded, her voice terrifyingly calm as she leveled her service sidearm directly at his chest.
“Your game is finished. The perimeter is locked down by federal agents, and you have nowhere left to run.”
Arthur let out a harsh, jagged laugh, his face twisted in a mask of bitter desperation. He pressed his weight down against the edge of the metal console, his eyes wide and unhinged.
“You think a federal cell scares me, Elena?”
Arthur shouted, his voice cracking with hysteria.
“I spent my entire life building a legacy, and you traded it all away for a shiny uniform and a blind sense of duty! If I go down, I’m taking every single offshore account, every asset, and every secret your mother tried to bury with her down into the abyss!”
Agent Miller stepped cautiously into the room, holding his badge up with his left hand while keeping his sidearm raised in his right.
“Mr. Vance, drop your hands slowly and step away from the terminal,”
Miller ordered, his tone authoritative and unyielding.
“You are looking at multiple federal felonies, including treasonous misuse of military logistics and financial fraud. Continuing this wipe will only guarantee you spend the rest of your natural life in a maximum-security federal penitentiary.”
Arthur glanced up at the overhead display screen: 98% Complete. A triumphant, manic grin spread across his weathered face.
“Too late,”
Arthur whispered, slamming his palm down hard onto the enter key.
The screen flashed a blinding, brilliant crimson, and the humming roar of the server mainframes abruptly cut out, replaced by a chilling silence. Arthur let out a long, shuddering breath, leaning back against the console as if he had just won the greatest battle of his life.
“It’s gone,”
Arthur muttered, a dark smile playing on his lips.
“The ledgers, the offshore accounts, the property titles... all wiped clean. You have nothing left to prove your case.”
Elena stared at the dead, black screen of the terminal. For a fraction of a second, the crushing weight of defeat seemed to press down on her shoulders. But then, a slow, steady smile touched the corners of her lips. She lowered her weapon slightly, stepping closer to her father with an unsettling composure.
“You always were a strategist in the analog era, Arthur,”
Elena said softly, her voice smooth and entirely unbothered.
“You forgot the cardinal rule of modern warfare.”
Arthur’s triumphant smile faltered, replaced by a sudden, creeping unease.
“What... what are you talking about?”
