Chapter 2 - The Gold-Sealed Deception

The heavy silence that followed Olivia’s terrified whisper hung thick in the hallway. Elena did not stop walking, though her ears strained to catch every syllable behind her. She reached the master study at the end of the corridor, pushing the door open to find her old desk cleared of her personal mementos. They had treated her like a ghost, assuming her deployment would end in a body bag rather than a homecoming. She dropped her duffel bag onto the hardwood floor with a dull thud, the sound echoing through the empty room. Her thoughts raced back to the document Olivia was holding—the gold-sealed trust that her late mother had insisted upon establishing years ago.
In the living room, Arthur snatched the paper from Olivia’s trembling hands. His eyes darted across the embossed lettering, his breath catching in his throat. The crisp legal language was unambiguous, drafted by a federal judge who had known Elena’s mother intimately. It stated clearly that upon Elena’s return from active service, ownership of the estate reverted unconditionally to her, bypassing all familial claims, including Arthur’s retirement-bloated guardianship.
“This is impossible,”
Arthur muttered, his face flushing a mottled crimson as he clutched the heavy parchment.
“I signed the transfer papers six months ago. We filed the probate extension through military legal.”
Olivia’s blonde hair fell across her face as she shook her head in sheer disbelief. She stepped closer to her uncle, her light blue button-down shirt rustling with her nervous movements.
“Uncle Arthur, look at the signature date,”
Olivia whispered, pointing a manicured finger at the bottom of the page.
“This was notarized three days after Aunt Sarah passed away. It predates your entire guardianship filing.”
Arthur swallowed hard, his gaze shifting down the hallway toward the master study. The realization struck him with the force of a mortar round: they had not just assumed Elena was dead; they had actively engineered her legal erasure while she was out of the country defending the nation. The champagne glasses clinked nervously as the hired movers quietly backed away toward the front exit, sensing a storm they wanted no part of.
“We need to fix this before she realizes the full scope of what was transferred,”
Arthur hissed under his breath, his hands trembling as he folded the document.
Footsteps approached the study door. Elena stood in the frame, her dark blue uniform immaculate, her expression a mask of cold fury. She crossed her arms, blocking their exit.
“You’re looking for a loophole that doesn’t exist, Commander,”
Elena said softly, stepping into the corridor and blocking their path.
