Chapter 12 - Breach of the Perimeter

The heavy steel front gate of the naval depot groaned in agonizing protest as the federal SUV slammed directly into the center locking mechanism at sixty miles per hour. Chain-link fence posts snapped like dry twigs, and industrial wire scraped violently against the vehicle’s doors in a shower of brilliant orange sparks. Elena kept her foot buried firmly on the accelerator, driving right through the wreckage and onto the tarmac of the vast military logistics yard.
Row upon row of towering shipping containers stretched out beneath the flickering sodium-vapor floodlights. In the distance, near warehouse four, two black unmarked SUVs sat abandoned with their doors hanging wide open.
“They’re heading inside the primary communications annex!”
Agent Miller shouted, drawing his federal-issue sidearm and chambering a round with a sharp, metallic clack.
“That building houses the direct satellite uplink to the Pentagon’s logistics database!”
Elena killed the engine, throwing the SUV into park before the tires had even finished spinning. She grabbed her tactical vest from the back seat, slipping it over her dark blue uniform in a blur of practiced motion, and secured her service sidearm at her hip.
“Stay low and follow my lead,”
Elena commanded, her voice dropping into a hardened tactical register.
“Arthur knows this facility inside and out. He helped design the security protocols for this sector twenty years ago.”
They sprinted across the open tarmac toward the reinforced steel doors of the communications annex. The heavy entry portal stood slightly ajar, a digital keypad hanging limply from the wall with its internal wiring sparking violently. Inside, the dim, blue-lit corridors echoed with the urgent tapping of computer keys and the frantic shouting of men rushing to execute emergency data wipes.
As Elena and Miller crept down the primary server corridor, a sudden shadow detached itself from the doorway of the central terminal room. Before either of them could raise their weapons, a heavily armed mercenary clad in unmarked tactical gear stepped out, leveling an assault rifle directly at Miller’s chest.
“Drop the weapon! Now!”
the mercenary barked, his voice muffled behind a black ballistic mask.
Miller froze, his finger hovering over the trigger of his sidearm, trapped in the lethal crosshairs. But Elena didn’t hesitate. Moving with blinding speed, she executed a textbook CQB disarm maneuver—stepping inside the guard’s firing arc, slapping the barrel of the rifle upward, and driving her palm hard into the man’s throat.
The mercenary gasped, his rifle clattering uselessly to the polished linoleum floor as Elena swept his legs out from under him, slamming him hard onto the ground. He went limp instantly, knocked out cold.
Miller exhaled a sharp breath, lowering his weapon slightly as he looked at her in sheer awe.
“Remind me never to get on your bad side, Captain.”
“Save the commentary,”
Elena whispered, stepping over the unconscious guard and pulling her sidearm as she reached the threshold of the central server room.
“We’re out of time.”
Inside the glowing blue chamber, surrounded by towering server racks and humming mainframes, Arthur Vance stood in front of a master terminal. His green sweater was stained with grease, his gray hair disheveled as his fingers flew across the keyboard, executing a master system wipe. On the main overhead display screen, a progress bar ticked upward rapidly: System Wipe: 87% Complete.
Arthur turned his head sharply at the sound of footsteps, his eyes widening in pure terror as he saw his daughter standing in the doorway with a weapon drawn.
“Elena!”
Arthur screamed, his hands hovering frantically over the delete key.
