Chapter 5 - A Badge in the Foyer

Elena didn’t flinch or strike back. Instead, she dropped her center of gravity, executing a textbook defensive pivot that cleanly broke her father’s grip without causing him physical harm, leaving him stumbling forward off-balance. Arthur caught himself against the mahogany console table, breathing heavily, his face purple with a mixture of rage and sheer humiliation.
“Touch a serving officer of the United States military again, Commander, and I will have you cuffed for assault on federal property,”
Elena warned, her voice dropping an octave into a tone of absolute, chilling authority.
The heavy double doors swung open wider under a firm push from the outside. Special Agent Marcus Miller stepped into the bright, modern living room. Dressed in a sharply tailored charcoal suit with a federal badge clipped securely to his belt, his presence commanded immediate attention. He surveyed the scene—the shattered champagne glass on the floor, the startled blonde woman clutching a legal document, and the aging retired commander struggling to regain his composure.
“Captain Vance,”
Agent Miller nodded respectfully, acknowledging Elena with a brief, professional salute.
“I see we arrived just in time to execute the preliminary inspection.”
Elena returned the nod crisply.
“Right on schedule, Agent Miller. You’ll find the unauthorized occupants attempting to tamper with the original trust documents right over there.”
Arthur straightened his green sweater with trembling hands, stepping forward to block Miller’s path. His military pride flared one last time, though it lacked any real substance.
“You have no jurisdiction here, Agent!”
Arthur protested loudly, his voice echoing off the high ceilings.
“This is a private civil dispute between family members over a residential property deed! Get out of my house!”
Agent Miller didn’t blink. He pulled a crisp, folded federal warrant from his breast pocket and unfolded it with deliberate slowness, holding it up so Arthur could read the embossed seal and federal judge's signature.
“Mr. Vance, this is a federal subpoena tied to military asset protection fraud,”
Miller stated calmly, his voice ringing with absolute finality.
“Under Title 10 provisions protecting deployed service members from predatory civil litigation and property seizure, you are currently under formal investigation.”
Olivia stepped backward until the back of her legs hit a packing box, her eyes wide with mounting terror as she stared at the federal badge.
“Dad… what is he talking about?”
Olivia whispered, her voice cracking in absolute panic.
“What did you sign us up for?”
Arthur stared at the warrant, his lips parting silently as the full weight of federal prosecution crashed down upon him.
“It was just supposed to be a temporary paperwork adjustment,”
Arthur muttered, his voice barely audible over the hum of the refrigerator.
Agent Miller stepped past Arthur, walking directly up to Olivia and extending his hand toward the gold-sealed document she was still clutching.
“Hand over the paperwork, ma’am,”
Miller instructed softly, his tone leaving no room for argument.
