Chapter 6 - The Confiscation of Lies

Olivia’s fingers turned white as she clutched the gold-sealed trust document against her chest. Her long blonde hair clung to her damp forehead as she looked pleadingly at her uncle, desperate for some magical solution that would make the federal agent and the glaring military captain disappear. But Arthur Vance was a broken man, defeated not by force of arms, but by the undeniable paper trail of his own greed. His shoulders slumped, and the rigid posture that had defined his decades in uniform finally collapsed under the crushing weight of his exposed deceit.
“Hand it to him, Olivia,”
Arthur said defeatedly, his voice sounding hollow and small in the expansive living room.
“There’s no use fighting the indictment now. They have the ledger.”
Slowly, with trembling fingers, Olivia extended the document toward Agent Miller. The federal investigator took the parchment with crisp efficiency, sliding it into a protective plastic sleeve before stowing it securely in his leather briefcase. He clicked the brass latches shut with a crisp, definitive sound that reverberated through the quiet room like a gavel falling in a courtroom.
Elena watched the exchange from across the room, her expression remaining neutral and restrained. There was no triumphant cheering, no petty gloating—only the cold, quiet satisfaction of truth prevailing over deception. She walked over to her canvas duffel bag, hoisted it back onto her shoulder, and turned her attention to the federal agent.
“Is there anything else you need from me at the moment, Agent Miller?”
Elena asked, her voice calm and professional.
“I’d like to inspect the rest of the property and ensure no personal heirlooms have been removed or damaged while I was deployed.”
Agent Miller nodded approvingly.
“We’ve already seized the digital registry backups from the local county clerk’s office, Captain. However, a complete walkthrough with you as the legal owner will help us inventory any missing assets for the final restitution report.”
Arthur flinched at the word restitution. He shuffled forward a few steps, his hands clasped nervously in front of his khaki pants.
“Elena, please,”
Arthur pleaded, his voice cracking with uncharacteristic vulnerability.
“Can we not handle this like a family? We can sit down, negotiate a settlement, and avoid dragging our name through the mud of a federal trial.”
Elena stopped walking, turning her head slightly to look at the man who had raised her. The restraint in her eyes did not soften; if anything, the cold resolve hardened further.
“You stopped being my family the day you decided to exploit my absence to steal my mother’s legacy, Arthur,”
Elena said quietly, the lack of an honorific title cutting deeper than any insult.
“You made your bed in the county registry. Now you get to sleep in a federal cell.”
Olivia let out a soft, choked sob, dropping onto one of the packing boxes with her face buried in her hands.
“I didn’t even know about the forgery,”
Olivia whimpered between gasps.
“Uncle Arthur told me the house was legally signed over to us fair and square!”
Agent Miller stepped toward the front double doors, gesturing for two local police officers waiting outside to step into the foyer.
“Mr. Vance, Miss Harris, you’re going to need to come with us down to the federal field office for formal questioning,”
Miller announced, his tone entirely professional.
Arthur turned toward the open door, his face twisting in sudden fury as he realized his daughter was entirely unmoved. He took a menacing step toward Elena, his finger jabbing furiously into the air.
“You’ll regret this, Elena!”
Arthur screamed, losing his composure entirely.

“You’ll never find the offshore accounts where the rest of the trust money is hidden!”
