Chapter 3: Ghosts of the Past**

Elena walked out of the corporate high-rise into the bustling downtown street, her mind spinning. The city noises faded into white noise as her mother’s voice echoed in her head: *“Truth is like water, Elena. No matter how deep you bury it, it always finds a way to the surface.”*
She took the subway back to Queens, arriving at the modest two-bedroom apartment she shared with her 19-year-old sister, Sofia. Sofia was resting on the sofa, her legs covered in a knitted blanket as she recovered from her latest physical therapy session.
"You're home early," Sofia noted, looking up from her sketchbook. "Did the gala agency fire you after that viral video?"
Elena paused, looking at her sister. "You saw the video?"
"It’s everywhere on social media," Sofia smiled faintly. "People are calling you 'The Graceful Server.' A billionaire stood up for you against his own family."
Elena sat beside her sister, gently holding her hand. "It goes deeper than that, Sofie. The man who defended me... his family was the reason Mom struggled so much."
Elena told Sofia everything—about the forged theft, the secret pension fraud, and Julian's offer to lead a multi-million-dollar charity designed to right those historic wrongs.
Sofia’s eyes welled with tears. "Are you going to accept it?"
"I don't know," Elena admitted honestly. "Entering their world feels like stepping into a snake pit. Clara Vance won't take this lying down."
"Mom didn't run from giants, Elena," Sofia said softly. "She stood up to them. If you take this job, you aren't working for them. You’re working for everyone they ever stepped on."

Elena nodded, her resolve crystallizing into iron.
