Chapter 2: An Unexpected Offer**

The morning sun filtered through the tinted glass of the 45th floor of Vance Enterprises. Elena sat nervously in a leather armchair, holding a warm cup of coffee she hadn't touched. Across the expansive walnut desk sat Julian Vance, dressed in a sharp charcoal suit, looking far more exhausted than he had the previous night.
"Drink the coffee, Elena. It’s not poisoned," Julian said with a faint, tired smile.
"Why am I here, Mr. Vance?" Elena asked, leaning forward. "If this is about a non-disclosure agreement or hush money, you don't have to worry. I just want my final paycheck so I can look for another catering agency."
Julian shook his head, sliding a thick file folder toward her. "I'm not offering hush money. I’m offering you justice—and an opportunity."
Elena opened the folder. Inside were corporate financial statements, foundation tax audits, and old photographs. In one picture, an elderly man was handing an award to a young Hispanic woman holding a toddler. Elena gasped. The toddler was her, and the woman was her late mother, Rosa.
"Your mother was the head of quality assurance at our primary manufacturing facility twenty years ago," Julian explained softly. "When my late brother took over, he cut corners on safety equipment. Your mother blew the whistle. To silence her, my brother and Clara orchestrated a smear campaign, accusing her of industrial espionage."
Elena felt the air leave her lungs. "They ruined her name. She spent the rest of her life working cleaning jobs just to keep us fed."

"And that necklace Clara tried to stage a theft for last night? It was purchased using the settlement money stolen from the pension fund your mother fought to protect," Julian confessed. "I need someone inside the foundation who cannot be bought. I want you to head the newly established Rosa Cruz Accountability Fund."
