Chapter 12: An Unlikely Bond**

After the ceremony, Julian and Elena walked along the East River boardwalk. The late afternoon breeze carried the crisp scent of autumn.
"You did an extraordinary job today, Director Cruz," Julian said with an authentic smile.
"I couldn't have done it without a partner who actually cared about doing the right thing," Elena answered, looking at him thoughtfully. "Most people in your position would have protected their family name at all costs."
Julian paused, looking out over the water toward the Manhattan skyline. "When my brother died, I inherited a legacy built on sand. I spent years pretending not to see the cracks. Seeing you stand tall in that ballroom—unafraid, despite having everything stacked against you—reminded me of who I wanted to be."
"We all need reminders sometimes," Elena said softly.
"I am stepping down as CEO of Vance Enterprises next month," Julian revealed. "I’m handing management over to an independent worker-led trust and dedicating the rest of my life to philanthropic development alongside your foundation."
Elena smiled warmly. "Then we have a lot of work ahead of us, Mr. Vance."
