Chapter 7 - The Voice from Above

The flashlight beam cut through the sulfurous gloom of the vertical shaft like a blade of white fire, pinning Julian against the rusted iron rungs. He squinted against the harsh glare, his breathing heavy and measured as he braced his boots firmly against the ladder. The beam shifted slightly, casting long, grotesque shadows across the damp concrete walls of the chute. Standing above the cast-iron hatch was not his father, nor was it one of the security guards. It was Rebecca. She peered down through the open grate, her expression completely unreadable in the harsh downward light, her black slip dress replaced by a practical utility jacket.

“You always were resourceful, Julian,” Rebecca said, her voice echoing down the narrow shaft with an eerie, metallic clarity. “Digging into the legacy archives on night one. Did you really think Arthur didn’t anticipate your digital dead man's switches?”

Julian wiped a streak of soot from his forehead, refusing to let his exhaustion show. He kept his hands securely on the rungs, tilting his head back to meet her gaze through the metal grate.

“Arthur didn’t write Protocol Omega, Rebecca,” Julian replied, his voice calm despite the burning in his lungs from the lack of fresh air. “That was my grandfather’s design. My father wouldn't even know the manual override sequence unless someone fed it to him.”

Rebecca’s lips curved into a faint, knowing smile. She knelt down beside the hatch, resting her forearms on her knees as she looked down at him with a mixture of pity and professional respect.

“You still think of yourself as the smartest person in the corporate food chain, don't you?” Rebecca asked softly. “Arthur didn’t need to remember the sequence. I brought it to him. Every single line of legacy code you thought you erased from the Zurich servers was backed up in my personal vault before you even started your hostile takeover.”

Julian’s grip on the iron ladder tightened until his knuckles turned white. The realization hit him like a physical blow: he hadn't been outmaneuvered by an aging patriarch; he had been systematically dismantled by the very woman he had underestimated and exiled.

“You planned this from the beginning,” Julian said, his voice dropping into a harsh whisper. “The leaked algorithms, the fabricated audits, the board revolt—it was all a setup to get me to expose my own offshore accounts.”

“It’s called due diligence, Julian,” Rebecca replied, her tone sharpening as she reached down and clicked a heavy padlock through the latch staple, securing the iron grate shut with a definitive, echoing snap. “And now, you’re going to sit down there and think about what happens when you try to swallow an empire whole without learning how to digest the bones.”

Before Julian could reply, Rebecca stood up, cutting off the flashlight beam and plunging the vertical shaft back into absolute, suffocating darkness. The heavy scrape of her boots faded away down the upper corridor, leaving Julian alone with the rhythmic pulse of the crimson hazard lights below. He hung suspended in the dark for a long moment, his mind racing through every possible escape route before he began descending the ladder back toward the abandoned server room.

When his feet finally touched the concrete floor of sub-level three, the automated lockdown klaxon suddenly cut out, replaced by the soft, eerie chime of a terminal booting up in the corner of the room. Julian walked slowly toward the glowing screen, where a single line of green text was slowly typing itself out letter by letter: THE BOARD IS WAITING FOR YOUR RESIGNATION.
